Amazon Basics Heavy Duty Retractable Auto-Load Ergonomic Utility Knife 3-Position Locking Blade with 4 Replaceable Blades in Designed Storage, Black/Silver

I have had -and lost- several knives of this sort over the years. All have been by the brand leader and, as a result, my expectations of them were high. However, they never quite lived up to expectationsas I found small but significant shortcomings in ease of use, convenience, and ease of changing blades. I had lost yet another and needing a replacement, I thought I'd give the Amazon Basics one a try, partly because of the price, good reviews, the description and apparent ease of use. The next day delivery provided by Amazon was another factor in its favour. It arrived yesterday and I soon got the immediate job I needed it for done and dusted. How I wish I'd bought one of these before. The first thing that was pleasing was the sensible packaging it came in - none of that stupid plastic bubble stuff that's impossible to get into without some cutting tool - stanley knife anyone????!!!!. Mercifully, mine arrived in a small but solid cardboard box. And yes, there were instructions although Amazon's site had video's and pdf versions of the instructions too. Actually the instructions are almost redundant. Once you have twigged to the purpose of the red plasic lock widget, how to remove it and and also put it back, the basic usage of the knife is pretty self evident. There are a couple of settings that allow the blade to be used with one of three possible blade extensions making it useful for different cutting jobs. Although there's no blade auto-change facility - given the price I wouldn't expect this - the folding design makes it very easy to change blades manually - the knife can hold three spare blades in the handle. The simplicity means there's less to go wrong too, always a virtue in my book. The knife seems well made and I like the design which is well thought out and provides a good balance between ease of use, convenience, and price without safety being sacrificed. Only real minus point is that plastic locking widget. It is perhaps too easy to lose and given the important role it plays in storing the knife safely, some way of making it an integral part of the knive seems desirable. Nevertheless, I'll stick with 5 stars as I can't award 4.5

Good quality build, with ability to lock blade out fully or half way, also great to see the spare blades are already inside the knife itself with just a push button to open it up for easy blade storage and management, much nicer feel then other cheap blades of similar type, would buy again

Managed to lose my previous utility knife - OK, everyone calls them Stanley knives, but I am trying to be good! No idea where - really irritating. I needed a solid comfortable knife to precision cut feathers for my archery arrows. It feels solid in the hand - well for my hand, which are large, so if you have smaller hands, you might find this too big. The lever to push out the blade gives you the option to partially expose the blade which you might find useful. it does stand a bit proud of the body, but not enough to catch on things. The handle is rubberised, so if you really need to push hard I cannot see it slipping easily. There is even a small hole at the back of the body so if you want to take it on expeditions and want to secure it somewhere, get out your trusty paracord and make a quick loop, it'll be fine. There is a clip to push open the body to reveal the spare blades and for replacing them. There is a spring to push it open which I can see falling off its holding stub if you catch it, but it looks like it can be easily put back. The only slight issue I can see is that you might accidentally catch it and can potentially see blades falling out without you noticing. Inside, there are 2 clear notches to hold the cutting blade in place, so making it easy to turn it round and make the most of the blade sharp point at the other end. All in all, a great product at an excellent price, I can see it lasting for ages.

Solid build, effective knife, clever design, very happy

Good value yet high quality item, having spent the afternoon chopping up boxes with it I can confirm that it feels good in the hand and made box disammebly a breeze. As you'd expect, the blades are sharp and the mechanism for replacing them is very straightforward. The design of the knife as a whole is pretty clever and leaves you with a nicely self contained device. After using it for several hours it wasn't too heavy or overly fatiguing to use for prolonged periods, it made the whole job a breeze so works very well. Given how sharp it was I didn't have to force it through anything so also feels pretty safe to use.

I have had this over a year now and it is still doing well , not yet had to buy any more blades despite it being in use for several heavy jobs , including cutting carpets up , and several of them too . also a lot of rubber mats have been cut up , still only on the 3rd blade .I can honestly say this is the best stanley knife on the market , I have bought loads of them over the years , some break as soon as you use them or only last a few months at the most . Very easy to change blades too , The one thing you do have to be careful with is it does have a tendency to pop open now and then if you hold it wrong , but as long as you are aware of this it isn't a problem as you soon learn to not make it pop open . , and i have never cut myself on it , so it's just a minor problem , but that is caused by the easy blade change button , i would still give it 5 stars despite that , as it is a very good quality , heavy solid tool .

This knife is excellent. It takes standard Stanley knife blades and has an unusual but excellent way to open the knife which is a slide button and the knife pops open and displays the existing blade ( retractable ) which can be turned around to use the other end and also a small store of about 5 or 6 spare blades within the rear of the knife itself. Absolutely excellent design with a rubberised grip making it even safer.

The knife itself is fine, easy to open and replace blades. But the quality of the blades is appalling. They do about 4 cuts then have to be changed.

I have used a number of "Amazon Basics" products now and all have been exactly that - a good basic version of whatever they are for, and this utility knife fits that perfectly. It is solid and has a simple but effective mechanism using 'standard' blades, of which it comes with a bunch of spares stored conveniently and safely in the handle. Not sure "heavy duty" really applies, unless referring to the slide mechanism (which is a bit stiff - but likely will grow easier with use) although it is certainly strong enough for practical use and high enough build quality I expect it to last a long time. If you are after an inexpensive basic but good quality utility knife for general purpose use, then look no further.
