This shirt from the WarbirdShirts collection features the General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark. Designed as a low-altitude interdictor after the 1960 U-2 shootdown destroyed miitary faith in high-flying penetration, the Aardvark entered service with the United States Air Force in 1967. The F-111 pioneered several new technologies, including variable sweep wings and afterburners. Aardvarks were deployed in Vietnam, but withdrawn after three were lost to the same malfunction; the F-111 was re-introduced in 1971 and used to bomb Cambodia. The US Air Force retired the Aardvark in 1998; the Royal Australian Air Force, the F-111s sole foreign operator, followed suite in 2010. Over 500 were built in total.
