Understanding Wood Finishing, 3rd Revised Edition: How to Select and Apply the Right Finish (Fox Chapel Publishing) Practical Guide with 350 Photos and 40 Reference Tables for Furniture and Cabinets Review: THE authority on wood finishing. BUY THIS before you touch a piece of wood! - This is actually the fourth time I have purchased this book, as I keep loaning (read giving away) mine to friends and relatives who ask me for wood/finish advice. If you only had two books in your woodworking library this should be first on your list. The second is open to debate, but this is absolutely necessary for the amateur and professional alike. Flexner is an acknowledged expert in the field today, and he enlisted other experts in the fields of woodworking, botany, and chemistry to completely understand the processes used to protect and produce various finishes on wood. As an amateur woodworker, professional chemist and artist/sculptor, I appreciate the depth and breadth of research Flexner has put into this book. Don't let the thought of technical information scare you. Flexner presents the basic idea of the technology, then he explains the tech and how to apply that knowledge to wood finishing in easy to grasp and very entertaining fashion. My first reading of Flexner was when I came across his book in a public library, opened it casually glancing through its pages, then starting to read. 3 hours later I had read every word and had no idea of the time I had spent. This book is the equal of any best-seller page-turner, even if you don't work with wood, but appreciate fine wood furniture, art, or utensils. I immediately bought my own first edition, then the next, now fourth copy of the third edition. If you are a beginner this book will tell you all you need to know, and you will need no more but practice and patience to be proficient. If you are experienced this book serves as a ready reference, and may very well challenge some finishing beliefs that we have all heard of or held to be true since the 1800's. It certainly did in my case, and I am a much better finisher today. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AS A MUST BUY TODAY! Review: Complete and Thorough - What a great compliment to my library. This book is a straightforward reference that has become my go to for ideas, troubleshooting, and techniques on how to get projects done in a reliable professional way. Very appreciative. Thank you. Wouldn't want to be without it.

Incredibly comprehensive and informative
This book is full of interesting and useful information about wood finishing. It's so comprehensive that it alone has become my sole resource for this topic. The author does a great job telling you all the secrets you need to know to understand how products are marketed and labeled, and how to know what you're buying. There are dozens of useful guides, how-tos, and troubleshooting grids. I could tell it was going to be a great book just based on the intro, because he hits on the feeling we all have about finishing--this topic is confusing, subjective, hard to figure out what's accurate, and gate-kept by manufacturers. I don't know much about chemistry but he does a good job of explaining that side of things without getting too in the weeds.

An absolutely excellent book on wood finishing
I spent 35 years doing air permitting for all types of coating operations and have extesive expeirnce working with coating vendors and applicators. This book clearly lays out the issues with coating vendors lack of reliable information and covers mnay of the myths surrounding all types of coating systems. All of the chapters for each finish chemistry are really well written with many tips on how to achieve superior results even in a shop that has limited amounts of dust control. Highly reccommended.

Thorough and informative
This book was exactly what my son needed for wood finishing. I gave it to him as a gift, and he looked so happy with it because it has information in it that resolved the issue he was having with wood finishing. Thank you for writing such a thorough book on this subject.
