Anatomy of the Moving Body, Second Edition: A Basic Course in Bones, Muscles, and Joints

A Lifesaver
This book is just what the doctor ordered. I am completing my certificate in fitness, which involves a fair bit of basic anatomy. Unfortunately, the course material on anatomy is not well written and is misleading in places, leading me to feel very confused about the structure and functions of (for example) the shoulder girdle. Then I discovered Anatomy of the Moving Body and suddenly it is all making sense. The real strength of this book is that it achieves just what the author sets out to achieve, providing just the right amount of information for those of us who need to understand how the body moves and fits together, but do not need a medical degree or physiotherapy qualifications. This book is spot on in that regard and it is actually easy and enjoyable to read! I keep it with me all the time as an easy reference source. One of the other reviews was critical of the fact that the drawings are in black and white, but I haven't found this to be a drawback at all. They are clear and easy to follow and I actually think that colour would have been an overkill and possibly would detract from the simple appeal of this book. I also have Chris Jarmey's The Concise Book of Muscles, which does have colour drawings. Used together, the two books are a great combination and I would thoroughly recommend getting both.In summary, Anatomy of the Moving Body is a great resource for those who need a basic to intermediate knowledge of anatomy. It is well written, well laid out and delivers just the right amount of information. Well done to the author.

very helpful
I find myself, late in my career, changing my specialty and this is wonderful for review AND learning things I was never aware of. I love this reference. Quick, clear, extremely useful. I keep it on my Kindle Fire at work and it is at my finger-tips whenever I need it. I have referenced this so often in the weeks since I got it, I would highly recommend this for all levels of training.

Good 3D view but no colour
This book is worth it, each muscle is shown in 3 D view, with bones. I just was disapointed that only the cover page is in colour.Compare to a classic anatomy book, the 3D view really helps to imagine the exact shape of each muscles.I would suggest that sometimes, it would have been good if some muscles are not shown only alone with the bone, but also with other muscles. For example, several extensors in the same view, not only each extensor with the bone. However, i recommend this book.

Written very clearly
Some anatomy books seem as if they are written deliberately complicated. That's my take. Not this one. If you are just starting Massage Therapy classes. I highly recommend you get this book, in addition to your course required books. Read your required book chapters and then follow up with this one. He's not "trippin" on his "Dr" Dimon Jr. title. On the book cover he even leaves his "Dr" title out of his name, but he is a Dr.(a Harvard graduate). He presents the material in his book like a good instructor would in class....so you can understand. It's not written to show how smart he is. It is written so the person without knowledge of the musculoskeletal system can gain some. Actually, I think the book is a compilation of lectures he has given at the Dimon Institute. Yes, the "Dimon" Institute for the Alexander Technique in Cambridge. Don't miss out on a very knowledgeable author that knows how to convey his knowledge to other. Anatomy is anatomy, that doesn't change, but it's his presentation that is so good. Look at the price, very inexpensive compared to the 100.+ books you may be required to purchase. He really should charge more for his book.

Nice easy breakdown makes the body all make sense
Although heavy on about 8 chapters about the throat muscles, tounge and spinal muscles that effect the voice (it is a book that is somewhat geared towards dancers, singers and actors after all and their voice is a major part of their life) the book covers the rest of the body nicely. Since this is from lectures it comes very easy to understand and full of knowledge which gave me a great idea as to how the body works together as a whole.

It's okay
The book is okay for me. The book gives basic information about the body anatomy. The only think I don't like is the pictures. x
