AprilAire 201 Replacement Furnace Filter for AprilAire or Space-Gard 2200 or 2250 Whole-House Air Purifiers - MERV 10, 20x25x6 Air Filter (Pack of 2)

I recently moved into a house with the old style Aprilaire 2200 air cleaner. Much to my shock, I found the previous owner hadn't replaced the filter in 5 years. Upon further inspection, I found that nearly all the combs in the old unit were broken. As such, I was faced with a choice -- buy new filter media and new combs or try out this upgrade item. As such, I decided on this item.The first thing I noticed was that it was packed quite well. If you've got a newer 2200 than I do, or a newer 2120, make sure not to discard the piece of Styrofoam included with the upgrade kit -- it needs to be placed in the door. However, with the old style unit, there is no need. The kit itself went together very easily -- no tools are necessary, and it snaps into place quite well. It seems very well built, though the edges are a bit sharp on the frame.Installation is easy enough -- once you've assembled the frame, simply remove the old filter (and the plastic box that contains it), and slide this on the same rail that the old one rode on. Bend the appropriate tabs to lock it into place (the older units and newer units use different ones), and you're done. The only thing you need to do after that is expand the new filter media and slide it into place, then replace the door.The media itself is rather different than that for the original 2200. It seems like a higher quality item at first glance. It certainly is easier to install than the other type -- those combs are such a pain. The only thing to watch out for, is that the media itself is a bit tricky to slip into place -- you can miss the rails it goes onto if you're not careful. However, it's miles better than the old one -- simply expand, and slide it in. The new filter media is not as wide as the older one, but appears to work just fine.I can't speak to the airflow this sort provides compared to the older type of media, as the filter it replaced was really, really, really clogged. However, it doesn't seem to have caused any problems on this end -- the air flow is certainly better than it was with the clogged filter. If I were to go by appearance alone, I'd say that this probably will be a greater obstruction than the original spec, but not to such a degree that it'll cause a problem.Pros: Easy install, easier to replace new type of filter than the original, decent price, no annoying combs, simple to put together, greater filtration ability, sticker included with new filter part number and date of install line.Cons: May be a bit more restrictive than the original, easy to cut yourself on the metal frame while assembling it.All in all? Great item. I'm quite happy with my purchase.

Great fitment, easy install. Lasts much much longer than the 1 inch thick filters and does a much better job of filtration.

Good value product, however, manufacturers changed product slightly, and retrofitting to original frame was slightly off. Still works, but wasn't expecting any changes for same model number.Original product held the product together w string types along sides.New product uses ribbon type affixed along top of ribs, and interferes with securing product in frame.Again, still works, but should have inspected prior.

Great product!I have an Aprilair filtration system. This filter was extremely easy to replace.My local heating and cooling company kept selling me an off brand filter, and they are difficult to replace. I will only buy this filter from now on!

A couple of years ago, I had a new ac/heater system installed, from the ground up. The contractor was very enthused about Aprilaire Filters, setting up the system to utilize Aprilaire 2200. I was very surprised when I first saw the huge size of the filters (they are several inches deep, and do look like an accordion), and read that one filter could last up to a year before changing, while performing at high efficiency for removal of airborne allergens.After the job was completed, I asked where I might find replacement filters. I was disappointed when told that the closest supplier was halfway across town. This was a big inconvenience, for someone who had previously been able to purchase filters from the local grocery store. I was upset I had not been given this piece of information prior to installation, because I might have decided on a different system.On a lark, I decided to search Amazon to see if they sold Aprilaire Filters---and there they were. Now, not only did I not have to drive for over an hour for replacements, these filters were delivered to my door with the click of a button, with speedy, professional service.I must admit that the first time I replaced the filter, myself, I did resort to some cursing. This is not a simple slide the old one out, and slide the new one in, system. This one requires some construction, loading the filter media into the permanent frame. But, after the second change, it became easier, and no longer a dreaded task.As far as the filtration goes, these filters do NOT last a year in my home. But, I do have a 126 lb, long-haired dog, that tracks in a lot of dirt and dust, despite my best efforts to keep him clean. I won't go over 6 months, to ensure maximum efficiency, so this does add to the cost factor, for me. Still, overall, I'm satisfied---more so, with the convenience of delivery.Update 08/26/11: This review was for genuine Aprilaire filters, not for generic replacements that apparently are now available through some sellers --- and the sellers do change, as this one has (several times) since my review posted. The generic filters may be great, and, they are slightly less expensive, but since I haven't tried them, as of yet, I can't endorse them. So, if this is important to you, then buyer beware. Make sure the seller is offering the original Aprilaire product.^ Shi True ^
