Q: current 5point rated for 40lbs is too small for my avg size 32lb toddler especially w/a winter coat. Is this one true to size? Will thick coat fit?

I agree with the previous 2 answers. My toddler is actually 42 pounds and tall. I keep her in the 5 point because she can undo the seat-belt and doesn't really listen when I say NO (go figure). She still fits with plenty of room and can even fit a doll in from time to time so 32lbs with a big coat would be just fine.

Maybe look for car seats that can hold big kids. 9 years is not considered toddler. Try the Graco 4-ever car seat holds up to 120lbs.

After 40lbs, you should remove the 5 point harness and use your regular seatbelt through the guided seatbelt path to restrain the child. You can use this seat (with your seatbelt) until the child is 110lbs or exceeds the height requirements.
