Astro Boy Omnibus Volume 1

Definitely an Omnibus for the fan and the interested party on one of the more famous first Anime and Manga characters
First time I have actually read the original manga. So well drawn and the translations make sense. These stories do have a depth not usually found in what would be dismissed as simply "kiddie fair" since it deals with human qualities and such high minded things as how we treat one another and deal with non human beings. As timeless as any well thought out and written and drawn. I also like that Mr. Osuma Tezuka introduces each work as if he he is speaking directly to the reader himself. Wish I could have met the great man, but in a way I do reading any of his work or watching their animated versions. One thing else these stories are much longer than the cartoon versions so there is more detail. Though some things were changed for US television so you will find different names for characters and some different story parts too. Well worth the money in my opinion.

The First Astro
Being the first volume, it really needs to pull you in. The other volumes, are not complete plots, but this one is 100% genius.

Pluto
The Greatest robot on earth is in this volume! I gave it 4 stars because it’s small but dark horse can get away with it because of the art style and price.

Bring your reading glasses
I honestly don't understand the hate for this volume. The pages are pretty small, but I had no difficulty reading it and enjoying the art. I guess it depends on the person.Aside from that, let me tell you, the stories in this volume are excellent. For me the thing that sets Astro Boy apart from other manga is that it's just fun. The plots typically aren't too complicated or deep, but the stories are fun. That's not to say that the stories don't have a purpose or a deeper meaning, as a matter of fact, there's a lot of deep subtexts. As an example, it seems as if in some stories such as His Highness Deadcross that the relationship of humans to robots is somewhat of a parallel to racism. Not sure if that's set in stone, but that's how I took the story.Anyway, I'm crap with reviews so I'll end this one with this: Do I recommend this volume? Absolutely. If you have poor vision do I recommend this omnibus? Absolutely not.

Great Manga but Questionable Book Quality
So I've got good news and I've got bad news. Lets start with the good, I picked up Astro Boy on a whim I never watched it before but I knew it was considered THE CLASSIC especially with it being the first TV Anime. To My surprise it blew me away, for being so "kiddie" in design the manga handles some depthy themes of humanity, racism, and technology. Its also got a great sense of humor and self awareness. Once again I was surprised by how much i ended up liking such an old style but it genuinely hooked me in. I definitely recommend the Manga. Now for the bad news, Im not sure what Darkhorse was thinking but they really did an iconic series dirty by making these books they way they did. Its small for an omnibus but has a lot of pages which isnt too much a problem until you damage the glued spine which with this books build seems pretty much unavoidable. On top of that even the cover is very thin and delicate. Ive read this book with almost too much care knowing the spine may be a problem yet still bends on the cover formed within just a day or two. The final BIG problem is this series seems to be out of print or something because if you look far any volumes after vol 1 the prices jump high. As a collector it disappoints me, I fell in love with this Manga fully expecting not to and i love the cover art and spine art a lot. As soon as i got half way through the book I knew i wanted the full set on my shelf but sadly it seems im being punished for my enthusiasm. As a whole this series is incredible and insanely ahead of its time but beware as a collector....Darkhorse please give this classic series the respect it deserves and republish this as hardcover a bit larger with Berserk Deluxe style spines. The cover art, the spine art, the way the volumes are arranged is all perfect you were halfway there and dropped the ball

You don't need 20/20 vision to read it!!
What's with the negative reviews? I almost didn't buy this Omnibus because of them. I have been enjoying it so far. Both the art and lettering are decipherable. Yes. The volume is small, but not much smaller than a Lone Wolf And Cub Omnibus volume. The lettering in both series are the same size, but Lone Wolf gets a better rating? I have no trouble holding it, either. If you have a set of healthy eyes (I'm near-sighted) and your interested in reading this omnibus, don' t let the reviews stop you.
