This is a pretty strong and long cable to have if you are trying to extend your USB port to make it easier to plug devices into your computer or media center or television. For me, I actually like to have to plug in my bigger USB dongles into my computer as my only spot is in the back of my computer. I like to have the USB right below my monitor so this is a good way to do that. I have those wireless dongles that are a bit on the larger end and take up more than one USB port. I have to unplug other USB device to plug it in. With this, I am able to easily plug in the dongle without having to worry about removing stuff and I also don't have to dig behind my computer in order to find the empty port. I can also use this to extend cables for hard drives as well. Another case is that I actually use this more for extending the USB port in the back of my TV. I hate having to try to plug in my thumb drive randomly to play videos. With this device, there is definitely less hassle. It also works for the laptop but you are probably just carrying extra length cables that take up space in your bag at that point. This cable is pretty well built and be aware that this thing is a bit on the heavier side being made of thicker material. The metal ends are a bit easy to scratch but the nylon fiber makes it tough and harder to fray. The down side is that it is really hard to keep in position. I had to tape mine down to the side to make it straight and tucked away. It is easy to plug into without having to hold the female side. Speaking of the USB A female end, you have to break in the female end of this cable. It actually took some force the first several times putting in the dongle/thumb drive before it was a bit easier to plug in. Using this cable does not reduce the transfer rate from what I can tell. It transfers at the same rate as if you were to plug it directly into the USB port. I ran my external hard drive to this cable and there were no disconnect issues either. Overall I think this is a good device to have if you are trying to plug in bigger device into usb ports without worrying about losing a port or needing to run an extension cable to plug in devices. It is well built but hard to keep it in one position. It is tough the first few times to plug into this extender. It does work with 2.5 external hard drive and does not require any additional power if it is a USB 3.0 device but if it is just a simple USB 2.0 hard drive it may require additional power.
