Excellent platform for building a server for a small business
Excellent platform for building a server for a small business. Our configuration uses 2 SSDs mirrored + 1 as a hot spare. Also, 1 large spinning hard drive configured for scratch storage and backups of the SSDs. To use the HD with this configuration it was necessary to set it up as a RAID0 consisting of only one device. Which is fine.Price was good for what I got. I upped it to 32GB so the 8GB RAM was kind of a waste.Biggest problem was the RAID configuration. The built-in software RAID controller (LSI) operates at 3Gb and will NOT support 6Gb speeds. So, even fast drives are going run at 3. And that sucks.Even more annoying is that after we got it on site we discovered that sometimes during a reboot the RAID controller setup is just missing. So, you may have to reboot multiple times. I am assuming there is a BIOS patch for this but haven't checked yet. Anyway, that really sucks. It hasn't presented huge problem yet but makes you awfully paranoid for a new server to be behaving like this. Finally, the cost for anything that goes with it from Lenovo is insane. Hot Swap power supply is $400. Server is ruggedly built but that is too much, period. No real regrets thus far, but I would probably want to do something different on the RAID controller if starting over. Case, MB, Power Supply, etc., all very heavy duty. Also, I needed a traditional serial port (not USB) and was pleased to find it came with one because you don't always see that these days.
