Is there a dark spot in the hotspot when you zoom out like the incandescent bulbs?

Yes there is indeed a dark central spot that appears as you zoom out from a tight beam to wide spread.

Is this compatible with a maglite D303

It should be ok as D303 is a 3 D cells maglite.

Is it better to buy a new maglite with a factory led or upgrade an old maglite with better build quality? New ones are cheaper build?

The upgrade from a different supplier worked very well just insure led is for the correct touch ie 3 cell or 2
