Contrary to naysayers THIS IS ALKANET!
I typically use Alkanet Root when producing Alkanet Oil for Gun Stocks, but spotted this powdered Alkanet for sale on Amazon and thought I'd give it a test drive. Careful to wrap securely in lint free cotton cloth I added two tablespoons of the powder to 300ml of Boiled Linseed Oil and waited. The reaction wasn't as quick as I usually find when using Alkanet Root and I initially thought I'd bought a bum batch, but thought I'd give it a while longer as time wasn't the enemy.Alkanet Oil needs to mature for a while once mixed anyway.I waited 24hrs, then lifted my improvised filter (Containing the Alkanet) from the oil and squeezed the "package" to gauge if anything was happening (The oil up to this point remained unaffected by the Alkanet), resulting in a minute red trace appearing. I replaced the package into the oil and again waited another 24hrs.Overnight success (Although 48hrs had passed), with a resulting deep red Alkanet Oil mixture that - when quickly tested - immediately drew into a piece of Walnut, giving an excellent result. Dryers in the Boiled Linseed Oil will cure it and end results depend upon depth of desired colour plus the amount of time the brew is left to mature.I need to experiment more with this new (To me) dye medium, but definitely recommend patience because this isn't money or time wasted and the end result is well worthwhile.

FAKE Alkanet
This is not alkanet, it does not dissolve and it does not colour.

Great in cold process soap!
I use this as cold process soap dye, its fantastic! I was a tad worried because it looked a tiny bit gray but it dyed the soap great, and its controllable enough to make somethig artistic. You don't seem to get much but adding a tiny bit will work.

Nice colour
Works well for giving red tint to linseed oil. Great for gun stocks. Keep oil and root in a mason jar in a warm place to get the most colour out of the root. I keep mine on top of the water heater.
