Draw...Then Write, Grades 1-3

Simple but GREAT for writing and drawing!
This is a fantastic book that is fun and useful in writing for my 2nd grader (7 years old) . This includes a step by step simple drawing that is repeated 3 times with writing suggestions prompts and a simple wordbank on one of the sheets. This helps my som to brainstorm about what he is going to write. Who or What? When? Where? Why ? Write a sentence. Then the other page they draw it again and write a small paragraph. This book is extremely simple but very useful. We personally look up YouTube videos on whatever the subject is to allow him to have greater content. If the picture is a clown, castle or porcupine then we spend a few minutes watching videos on the history of clowns, etc to go with the book. We added this book to our home school for additional writing with the added drawing to make it fun. This was a simple way to make writing a daily event.

Great for aspiring young artists
Great little basic illustration book with room to write about their drawings. My little one loves to pull this book out every day.

Awesome book for 1st grade boys!
I purchased this book as a homeschool supplemental after finding an OLD copy on my parents shelf from when I was in school! I was hoping my 6 year old boys would enjoy the drawing aspect of the book -- but as their mother/teacher I was also hoping it would help provide some "fun" writing activities! This newer version (vs the 1986 version I had found) has three pages for each drawing -- the first page teaches the child how to draw and then has the child fill in the blanks on a few sentences. The second page again leads the child step by step through the drawing and then has them answer "who, what, where, when" etc, the third page provides a drawing prompt (I.e "draw the monkey in a tree"), and then has the student write about the drawing on their own.My boys sometimes grown over having to write so I was crossing my fingers they would be as excited about this book as I was. Well, it didn't disappoint! They love when they get to do these worksheets and have told me they are their favorites. The bonus for me is I know their brains are being stretched in a creative direction for a moment, and I love that it encourages them to write in a way that is enjoyable to them!

My daughter enjoys it.
I don't feel this workbook does the best job of helping children understand sentence structure. The child work from the same picture for 3 days progressively building more of the sentence themselves each day. It is ok practice but if I used the whole book it would be quite redundant. This book is not a bad purchase but not quite what I was hoping for. What it does do is give more handwriting practice without actual copy work which is good.

Nicely leveled pages of good quality paper
Nicely leveled pages of good quality paper. The step by step drawing instructions were perfect for my 6-7yo kiddo. I like the writing prompts, so DD doesn't have to sit there overthinking what to write (she's got a great imagination). The same subject is presented in three levels (grades 1,2,3). There is one picture presented for 3 levels. Grades 1&2 have step by step drawing instructions, grade 3 simply shows the final line drawing (but your student can refer to the other pages to see the steps if they want). Grade 1 has a word bank and fill in the blank prompts, Grade 2 has fill-in prompts that will result in a sentence with a space at the bottom of the page to write a sentence. Grade 3 has a writing prompt and space for a short paragraph (about 3-5 sentences depending on how big your student's printing is). My kiddo's brain is still way faster than her hand... so she will dictate her response to the prompt to me which I write on a separate paper. Then she will copy it in the space provided. Win-win here! She gets to do some art/drawing each day ANNNDD we fit in some writing that's fun :)

Excellent tool for developing writers!
I love this book!!! It does such a great job developing writing skills! If you don’t know where to start, start here. There is no other workbook I am aware of that goes through the simple progression repeatedly like this. It develops vocabulary and confidence before kids write independently. It also pulls out descriptive language and sentence variety even for early writers that struggle to form sentences independently. I have used this book with 2 special needs children and have seen them develop both confidence and writing skills from this book that have transferred to other writing activities.

1st grade homeschooler
I really like this book. I will say that the images they give them to draw are a little lack luster, however, we us youtube how to draw videos to make our pictures. I love the simplicity of the writing requirements. Works on writing, reading, spelling and art.

Strange organization
This is arranged by animal, not by level, which makes it impossible to pull out a page and have one level's work, or to hand to a child and say "I want you to work on the page with the caterpillar." This is very frustrating to work with.
