Knowledge and commitment are both required as players track the development of civilization, from the farthest reaches of the past to modern times. It's a complicated journey--especially on a one-dimensional playing board--but those who know what they're getting into will love it (the PC version, just as detailed, has a dedicated fan base). The game revolves around the acquisition of resources--metals, spices, fuels, media, technology--all of which spur more innovation in some way. Of course, the game has its own revisionist twist on how certain regions progressed, but that doesn't distract. Players know there is as much fantasy involved as fact. Included are "exploration" markers, faux currency, playing cards, and molded props like soldiers, settlers, and property. The 36 by 46-inch playing-board map, moreover, is based on a pre-continental world, divided into vast regions rather than countries. A MUST for CIV Fans...
The Civilization board game is a must for any CIV fan. I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of it crossing over to a board game, but I must say, I am very happy with the results. Eagle Games did a great job with the detail and in making it fun. It does take a while to learn the rules, so be patient. My wife and I are both addicted to it and can't wait to invite some friends over to play it with us. This is one game you will NOT be disappointed with. It's well worth the money. The ONLY suggestion I would have is investing in some drawers or trays for the game pieces as there are A LOT of them. We purchased some plastic or rubbermaid containers to store the pieces in. It makes it much easier to keep them together and to sort out when necessary.

A VERY LONG COMPLICATED game
This game is similar to risk. It has lots of rules and versions of play. My son is always eager to play it, but it takes literally days and days, so its one of those games you need a place to leave it set up. It has some history and strategy to teach about past technology and military strategy. Lots of small pieces. Its a cool game, but as a busy family we have never had the chance to finish it even when we have devoted a full weekend...maybe if we get snowed in this winter?!

many problems with this game
I was excited to play this game when I first bought it. However, after on eplay, I will probably never play the game again.I am a big fan of the pc game and assumed I would be able to play the board game with little difficulty. However, there were just so many issues. First, the instructions are pathetic. It lists game pices that don't even exist. For example. It told me I could build chariots, but there are no chariots included in the game. Second, trying to keep cities and improvements in order was confusing and usually got messed up during game play.If you are thinking of purchasing this game, don't bother. Play the pc game again instead.
