Fabric Wax Bar | Large Bar

Bought a pre owned wax jacket. While the jacket arrived in good shape, I wasn’t sure about how long since it had been waxed so I decided to wax the entire jacket. Huckberry recommends Otter Wax so I got the larger bar along with the tool and brushes. Did a spot clean and then on with the wax. Small circular motion seemed to work fine. As more wax was applied the jacket became shiny. That’s when I moved to another section. Lots and lots of elbow grease. Took about 90 minutes to do the front left and right, shoulders and center back panel. I’ll finish the rest this evening. I used a heat gun on the parts done already and melted the wax in. I did notice a few white patches afterward but a little more heat and a towel to wipe away the excess and all is good. Hopefully I can finish tonight and be ready to wear on Monday. Update: the remainder of the jacket took another 2hrs or so. Hung it to cure for the next day. After roughly 24 hours I tried the jacket on. First thing I notice is how stiff the jacket is now but this is wax so to be expected. I also noticed a lot of white residue at folds and creases. Pulled out the heat gun to melt it back in and waited another few hours. I still see a few white spots but simply brushing it with my hand seems to be enough to remove it. The jacket is noticeably darker but the character hasn’t changed at all. As it happens, we had snow at time so I stepped outside with it and as expected the water beads and comes off with a shake. Satisfied. Should be good for a couple years.

I bought this mainly to help waterproof some canvas bags and jackets, and I have been really impressed with the results. The wax goes on pretty easily once warmed up a bit, and it gives the fabric a really nice rugged, classic look without feeling overly greasy. I also appreciate that the ingredients are all natural and PFAS-free, which made me feel a lot better about using it regularly. After applying it, water definitely beads up much better, especially on older canvas items that were starting to lose protection. The three-pack is nice because it should last quite a while, even if using it on multiple items. Overall, this feels like a really solid quality product and something I will continue keeping around for jackets, bags, and outdoor gear.

I picked up this Otter Wax bar because my kids' shoes (and my husband's, let's be honest) were constantly getting soaked. I was tired of wet socks and muddy footprints all over the house. It's a pretty big bar, so it feels like it will last us a while, which is a plus. The biggest thing I've learned is that you really, really need to apply this everywhere. I tried it on my youngest's canvas sneakers first, and if you miss even a tiny spot, it's super noticeable. The waxed parts look a bit darker and have a different texture, so any untreated areas really stand out once it dries. It definitely takes some elbow grease and patience to get good, even coverage, but it does work well once you've put in the effort. Overall, this is a solid product for waterproofing canvas shoes, hats, and other accessories. It’s effective and made with natural ingredients, which is important to me with three kids running around. Just be prepared to spend some time on the application to make sure you hit every single spot. It's great for keeping the family's feet dry on rainy days, but it's definitely a hands-on project.

the bar was easy to use. just rub it gently over the fabric and then rub it in to smooth it out. i used it on a pair of shoes im wearing to ren faire. the water just slides right off of them now. it didn't really change the fabric. its a little darker in spots now, but it fits the look. it makes them look weathered a bit, in a good way. i hung them up in my closet to dry for a few days and there is no more stickiness to them. i only used half a bar on two high tops, sized 9. if you are doing more than 2 pairs, you might need to get more than one bar. i think it's a good value, $10 to waterproof two pairs of high tops, closer to 3 pairs if they aren't. i would recommend this product to other and will buy again. i don't remember if it had a smell as i was putting it on, maybe like beeswax but that was it. it is not a strong smell, once it's dry, it doesn't really smell at all.

I happened into waxed denim from an internet purchase of some Levi's. I knew I liked the appearance of the pictures, they didn't say they were waxed, but after receiving them and researching I realized what I had received. I loved the jeans. I also read that most people recommend not washing them. The pair I got was a bit big, so I did wash them once on gentle, no soap, and still the waxed finished faded a bit in some spots, and some typical wear spots also appeared in the crotch area, above my back pocket where I keep my wallet, and along the outside seam down the outsides of the legs. My research on Youtube started about what I had and how to fix it. There were several options and this is the one I settled on. The bar is far smaller than I expected by eyeballing it, but it lasted much longer than I expected. I touched up the entire jeans, front to back, and could probably do so 5 more times with this small bar. That being said, if I order again I will probably order the larger one. The texture (tack) of the jeans I had were already cured. Adding this made them feel more oily and different-- the beeswax content is apparent by the tack. I froze them first to set, and chose not to do the blow dryer because I don't own one, and because I had no "white". Freezing first didn't get rid of the tack for me. So I decided to throw them in the dryer for about 5 minutes on low. This did a great job of sealing and removing the tack and smoothing it out and make it more like what I received originally from Levis. As some other reviewers stated, I couldn't see waxing an entire denim garment with this product. It seems like "dry" denim would take a tremendous amount of this product. I am interested in some of the other soft cream type products meant for this activity and if I try one I will compare it here. Finally, some people remarked about the smell. I consider this an extremely low fragrance product, and any scent that it does have seem very natural. It has an organic smell, not floral and not spicy, more of a muted saddle soap type smell, or a mild shoe cream smell. Maybe a potato-ish, leather-ish smell. The product contains no animal products, and is a mix of bees wax and plant based oils.

If you follow the instructions on the packaging, then the wax will ruin whatever article of clothing you put it on. The notion that smearing a thick coating of beeswax on something like a duck canvas coat, letting it cure for a day, and then wearing it...is idiotic. If you like getting everything sticky your coats touches, then by all means follow the instructions on the box. If you like a shiny, streaky finish on your clothing, then by all means follow the instructions on the box. If you like white bits of dried wax to leave smudges all over your other clothes, then by all means follow the instructions on the box. Now that we've covered how NOT to use this product, let's get down to why this stuff is a great and necessary purchase. Animal fibers, such as wool, and manufactured fabrics like polyester are water repellant and quick drying. Cotton is not and is a huge and literally heavy pain if it gets wet. Otter Wax is designed to add a layer of water repellant to cotton clothing. Here's how you should apply the wax to achieve this effect. I used it on a coat, so that will be my point of reference. Here's what you'll need: -Otter Wax - Wagner 0503008 HT1000 1,200-watt Heat Gun or a hair dryer. The heat gun works much more quickly. -A king sized pillow case that you have no intention of using on a pillow ever again. King Pure-Cotton Pillow Case Covers - (2-Pack, each 20 inches x 40 inches, White) 100% Cotton for Maximum Softness and Easy Care, Elegant Double-Stitched Tailoring - By Utopia Bedding are cheap and will do the job just fine. 1) Make sure the article to which you're applying the wax is both clean and bone-dry. I cannot overemphasize this. If the cotton is in any way wet the wax will not stick to the fabric. 2) Apply the wax using short and firm strokes to the entire article of clothing. Make sure to cover every crevice, seam, and around every button. The coat should have a chalky-white look to it. 3) Hang the article of clothing to dry. You should give it 24 hours. 4) Put the article of clothing in the pillow case, tie the case shut, and throw the clothing into the dryer for about an hour on medium heat. This will melt much of the wax into the item and save you some work. When you remove the clothing from the dryer it will have a distressed look and still be a bit waxy. 5) With slow back and forth swipes, use the heat gun to melt the remaining wax. You'll see the white residue liquefy and absorb into the cotton. Don't worry if there are patches of what look like grease stains after the wax melts. This is just a patch where you applied slightly more wax than the surrounding area. It will fade over time. 6) Hang the item for another 24 hours. This last bit of drying time is critical. It allows the wax to set. If you wear the article immediately the distressed white patches will form at, for example, the elbow of your coat. The bending motion will "wring" the wax out of the fibers. 7) You should follow these steps about once per year. And there you have it. Water will bead right off your clothing. As a personal opinion, I wouldn't recommend using this on pants. The near constant friction would wring or scrape away the wax too quickly to make the whole application process worth it.

This is a decent product in terms of cost-effectiveness. I should point out, though, that this wax helps fabrics to resist (repel) water; it does not make them water-proof. I used it on a canvas messenger bag, and it works ok if you just have to walk for ten minutes under the rain, for instance, which is the only thing I needed. For anything more than that, you should use some other (actual) water-proofing method. As some other users have indicated, the instructions on the package are not terribly helpful. I added, apparently, too much wax at first and thus the canvas didn't really dry, even after five days. I tried putting the waxed bag inside a pillowcase and using the tumble drier for half hour, but didn't help much. Since I knew that providing heat was important for curing the fabric, I ended up using an oven, which finally did the trick. So... my two cents: - DO NOT apply too much wax at first. It's much better to give the fabric a light layer, let it dry, and then apply another one. If you have never done this, is hard to tell how much is too much, but let us say that the wax should not be too noticeable and you should still be able to feel the texture of the fabric, despite being a little sticky. - HEAT IS IMPORTANT. I used an oven (a regular stove oven) because I figured that it was better to apply heat evenly across all the fabric. I should say that an oven at 200 F for 20 or 25 minutes works fine. Don't over do it, specially if your waxed object has metal parts. If it has plastic parts, just don't do it at all. After the oven, my bag looked and felt great, no white stains and good water resistance. -BONUS: kind of obvious, but different fabrics take a different amount of time to dry. Case in point, the canvas from my bag dried much faster than the webbing shoulder strap, a plastic-based fabric.

J’ai utilisé plus que la moitié d’un pain pour le blouson complet en Taille XL. Peut-être que la prochaine fois j’essaierai la cire à chauffer Barbour.

Easy to use, did not clump up, spreads buttery smooth over the canvas. Use a heat gun.

Used this on my wife’s waxed cotton jacket. Applied it in an orderly manner section by section. I warmed each section first with a hair dryer and then rubbed the wax on, and into, the material. It went on very smoothly and any small chunks were easily rubbed into the material. Visible wax along the seams melted away with a little more heat as necessary. One bar will go a long way. I didn’t know what to expect but I couldn’t be happier with either the process or the result. Looks like new.
