A Good Alternative
I have used these for my pair of Big Dog fountains. They seem to work better than the Drinkwell filters. I flush them as directed before first use to remove free carbon, which always does the job. In use, the water stays clean longer with respect to all forms of contamination I can see. BTW I think all of these filters are too expensive to replace with new ones at change-out time, so I clean, sterilize and recycle them after each use with my own quick system, as follows (please keep in mind that my goal is to give my dogs and cats excellent water quality, like everyone reading this, I suspect). I flush the used filter surfaces sideways at the sink to remove any scum, sometimes using a brush lightly and on the side edges, then back-flush them from the carbon side to the other side with full warm flow. A hardy spray of Hydrogen Peroxide into each cell follows, on both sides. Pursuant to my reply below and an abundance of caution, I intend to also flush the filters with water after a few hours contact time, though I've not done that before. I dry them thoroughly on the dish rack, which takes two days, then bag and reuse them in rotation. You can use them successfully many times with this procedure. I don't know whether the carbon layer becomes used up, but if so they are still effective as basic filters. Some will probably be critical of, or uncomfortable with, the use of Hydrogen Peroxide, but the water part also works without it. The bottom line is that all of these filters are too darned expensive to replace them with new ones every time. I hope this helps.

Look a like
I gave this 4 stars because I just started using these filters and have only had them in my fountain for 1 week. They seem to have less charcoal in the filter than the other brand. So the jury's still out as to how well these will hold up.

Work well and easy to insert.
I use these filters in my 20 gallon tank for years. They work well.

These are a poor fir for the small Drinkwells.
I have to cut them with heavy shears and bend them to get them out of the slot in the small Drinkwells.

Not good!
I have had the same problem with each filter that I've tried. I've soaked them for over a hour and rinsed them but they still turned the water sudsy. It upset my cat's stomach and she threw up. I purchased these in February but didn't start using these until recently since I still had other filters. It's now too late to return them.

Not much charcoal?
I originally bought PetSafe Drinkwell with PetSafe Drinkwell Replacement Charcoal Filters (3 pk for approx $10), then changed to this - NISPIRA premium Platium CHarcoal Water Filter (12 pk for approx $20), thought to save 50% of the cost. I changed the filter today from PetSafe to NISPIRA and noticed considerable difference in the quantity of charcoal inserted.I felt and compared the both content - PetSafe one felt it's each pocket filled with charcoal bits, while I could feel 1-2 bits each in NISPIRA's. I wonder if anyone opened them up and checked how much charcoal it contains, or how can us pet owners ensure it's purifying the water?

Best bang for your buck!
In my opinion, this is the best bang for your buck alternative on the market. Quality is of course not as good as the OEM, but it is adequate relative to its price. I like that it is individually packaged - a feature not even available with the OEM filter.
