Fascinating
I have recently returned to swimming after injury and am loving it, so was intrigued to read this book. It begins with a relatable homage to the joy of swimming, why we love the water so much and some of the physiological benefits for our bodies. (It also lists some of the many unpleasant side effects mostly from open water swimming, ugh) The book unpicked a fascinating history of swimming in the US with an important explanation of when pools were desegregated, how many families began building their own pools to prioritise their families over community. A fascinating piece of racial history that I was unaware of. The author interviews swimmers who have used it for recovery and also those who whilst posted in Bagdad helped teach soldiers and locals alike how to swim in Sadam's pools that were previously off limits. An eclectic mix of perspectives make this an interesting and varied read.

Starts well but then seems to splash rather than swim
I love swimming and being in the water so was excited to read this book. The first few chapters are great and really capture the essence of why some may of us gravitate to water and love to be in it. However, about halfway through it just ends up being stories about people who swim rather than the sticking with the concept of 'Why We Swim'. I ended up almost not wanting to read the rest of the book although I did read it all hoping it would revert back to the format of the first few chapters. Sadly it didn't. If you get one secondhand for a a couple of quid then buy it, otherwise.........

A beautiful celebration of swimming
I've only recently discovered the joys of swimming, and this book made me even more excited for all the aquatic adventures that await. It's extremely well-written, combining relatable personal anecdotes with broad research, punctuated by some truly amazing stories. It flows (pun intended) very well - I read it in just two days, and underlined several particularly elegant passages. It would also make for a great gift to that person you know who loves swimming.
