DK Ballet: The Definitive Illustrated Story

Comprehensive for the ballet fan
This is a big hardcover book and excellent value for money. Each double page spread details a specific ballet (some get two double pages like Swan Lake), or less frequently a specific dancer/choreographer/company. In chronological order and with lots of photos, it is a good overview and covers the history of ballet and works across various companies internationally, as well as being quite up to date. Not something you'd necessarily read as a book, but something to dip in and out of when the mood takes you. Every ballet fan needs this book!Note that this is not a book about 'how to' do ballet (i.e. with pictures and details of positions and movements etc). If you are looking for that 'The Ballet Book' by the same publisher seems to fill this space. This book is about the history of ballet through various ballet (choreographed pieces), and some details on choreographers, ballet companies, ballet stars and composers.

An excellent coffee table book
Although I enjoy watching ballet, I'm not especially well versed in its history or in the story lines, even for some of the more well known pieces. This book was therefore an excellent way for me to educate myself whilst also enjoying the many elegant photographs. There are some interesting background articles on ballet and its onstage presentation, and it cleverly gives a synopsis of each ballet with simple, clear summaries of the plot for each act. As with all DK books, it's simple, clear style serves to educate and entertain at the same time. An excellent addition to any library or coffee table.

A beautiful book for ballet lovers of all ages
This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever had the pleasure of owning. It is packed with stunning photographs and clear information. I love browsing through it and find the visual breakdowns of the ballets particularly useful. My little ballerina (aged 6) also loves looking through it, learning about the different ballets, great dancers, and inspiring productions.

Disappointing.
I am uncertain who this book is intended for. As to "illustrated" it is certainly a picture book, a definitive history it is not. The book claims to include synopses of 70 popular ballets, however, the detail is simplistic and (in my opinion) crucial aspects are missing. No point will be served in further analysis of the content as I do not think this volume was published for someone serious about ballet and its evolution. One for the coffee table and occasional dusting!

Beautiful Photos
I bought this book for my 10 year old granddaughter. She was delighted. She may not read all the text, but she loved the photos, and recognised some of them. A great book to keep, even if it is just on the coffee table.
