Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: The Art of the Film

More of a making-of book
The media could not be loaded. This book is more like a making-of book that talks about how the film was made. Depending on your expectation, you may or may not be disappointed with the book. This 192-page hardcover is filled with concept art, film stills and commentary on the production process. The pages are laid out like magazine style, quite busy but beautiful.Half of the book are filled with film stills. They are beautiful, yeah, but if you're one who likes to see production art, storyboards, character designs, then you may feel that all those film stills could have made way to include more artworks.About the concept art. They are a mixture of sketches, digital painting, a few 3D renders and some schematics of things like Superman's statues, Batcave. The digital paintings are nice but they are often quite rough as you can notice the lack of detail when blown up to large sizes in the book. Some of the digital paintings lack the finesse while others actually look wonderful when done right. The sketches are also nice, but perhaps too sketchy. Especially for interiors, buildings, it can be quite difficult to visualise the structures. As for character design, Superman's pretty much fixed in terms of look. Batman has the new Batsuit, mech suit and his new gadgets. Wonder Woman has 6 pages of coverage. Lex Luthor also has 6 pages. Doomsday has 2 pages. There aren't a lot of costume or character designs to speak of. Most of the characters you'll see them in the form of film stills. Batman's the one with more designs to feature. It's a mixed bag for me with regards to the art. But I'm saying that because I know and have seen better superhero film artbooks out there. If you have the artbook for The Man of Steel, you should expect art in a similar style. So the highlight of this book is actually the beautiful film stills of scenes and characters. The other highlight is the insightful commentary talking about the production process. The downside is the art? I'm not too sure but I felt that the artworks could look better. Or maybe it's just not the style of art I was expecting. Oh well, art is subjective.Overall, I still think it makes for a nice companion to the film. As a making-of book, it's quite good but as an artbook it can be better.3.5 out of 5 stars.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

More like a "Making of the Film" Book than an "Art of the Film" Book
This book should really be titled "The Making of the Film" rather than "The Art of the Film". As an artist/artbook collector, I was pretty disappointed to see that the number of photographs appearing in the book seem to outnumber the amount of sketches, paintings, etc. Now, I believe that photography is art just as well as drawings and paintings, but most people who buy art books for film do so expecting and desiring to see the pre-developmental drawings and paintings that led to the final product.Do not buy this book if you desire a book full of vis dev sketches and paintings. I intend to keep the book despite my disappointment, because it is still fun to flip through and read about how the film was constructed. However, this definitely affects the likelihood of purchasing (or at least pre-ordering) future art books from DCs impending Justice League films.

Excellent.
Very good presentation of the product, excellent material, Very illustrative in relation to the arts and visual concepts of the film and to understand more the vision of Mr, Snyder and his version of the DC universe related to the trilogy of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.

like me, you will love this book
If you are a fan of movies, like me, you will love this book. Full of great pictures, concept art, and behind the scene insight on the ideas, characters and props used during the film. A lot attention went into the making of the book and it shows. If you have a film fan, a DC fan, or a superhero fan in the family, this will make a great gift. I'm very happy with the purchase.

An Action-Packed Art Book
This books gives a nice scope of the film, and some behind-the-scenes insights as well. The book spoils some of the movie plot some, but buying a book like this - it's to be expected. I enjoyed reading the commentary from the Director, Producers, and Executive Producer about the film being made... as well as some quotes from the actors themselves about the role they play. This is a really nice art book on the film, and I proudly have it displayed with my other film art books. It's worth getting, especially if you enjoyed watching the film.

Fun to look at
Awesome book. Came in great condition and very timely. I was disappointed that a lot of the "artwork" was promotional images from "The Dark Knight Trilogy" photoshopped into BvS set drawings. It was just weird and seemed lazy on the part of the movie production.

Now I know why the movie sucked.
The thing about this book is that it shows that even in preproduction, the movie was already destined to flop. The concept art itself isnt bad at all, but the fact that everything is so dark and gritty to the point where I had to sometimes shine a lamp on the book itself to see what I'm looking at tells me what was wrong. Everything from dark wash values to the weird story telling and references felt off. So. 3/5.

a good book of images from the film
This is a deluxe hardback book - titled "The Art of the Film" in relation to "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice". It's 192 pages in length, and is full of glossy images from (and about) the movie. The author - Peter Aperlo - does offer some details and insight into how the film was conceived, designed and produced. Additionally, there is an outline of the main story. There are numerous quotes from the director and the main actors, explaining the film-making process. If you're interested in finding out more about the 'back story' of the movie, you'll find this book fascinating. While there are several drawings, this book is less of an "art of the film" as it is a "making of" the movie. Indeed, the director presents an afterword where he says this is a "making of book". As such, I think the title is something of a poor choice. The best thing about the book are the photos, showing behind the scenes of – as well as many images directly taken from – the movie. If you're a fan of the film and wish to browse through a good quality book of images, then this is a perfect item. I bought the book with this in mind. Had I especially been after the "art" of the film, I would have been somewhat disappointed. Nonetheless, there are several pieces of artwork - and I've attached some photos of these for you to see (my apologies for the poor lighting).Overall: if you have enjoyed the film, and you want a piece of memorabilia, this is a good book of quality photos relating to the movie.

The art of ART.
I actually bought this and the “Justice League : Art of the film” book together with another piece of DCEU merch during all the hype around the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and I love both of these books. The Batman v Superman : Dawn of Justice art book is absolutely sensational. The art element is one thing but the write ups and references from cast and crew as well as behind the scenes photographs & stills are a fantastic addition too and it’s nice for someone like me who has a keen interest in film production to be able to see all these angles of the filmmaking process through something like this. Zack Snyder is an unappreciated gem.

Good book but not really an art of
The book is presented beautifully. But and it's a big but, it's not a concept art book. There is hardly any in here. It's got photos of most of the characters and a brief description of them. Overall a good book but not really what it should be.

Cool guide for a cool film
Even though I was under the impression that this would be more behind the scenes footage, I can't say I was not happy with the result. Lots of production designs (that's what I aimed for) and a thorough look at the characters of the film, with cast and crew quotes and a rich photo archive from the set
