Q: How much batter goes in each mini loaf?

I use the full recipe for a banana bread/zucchini bread and divide it up in the eight mini loaves.

Q: do these pans rust after a while?

I have been using it since I received it and no rust. Very good pan

Q: Are the loafs strait sided or are they smaller on the bottom than the top?

The pans are definitely not straight sided. The bottoms are clearly smaller than the tops.

Q: Would you guys say this is a good size to hand out small holiday loafs of bread (coworkers, family...)? Trying to determine if they are too small. :)

They are pretty small. I was guessing they are about the size of 2 standard sized muffins. I just made banana bread loaves and muffins. I weighed one mini loaf and it was 3⅞ oz. Then I weighed 2 muffins together... 3⅞ oz! Wow! I guessed exactly right! For a gift, if you would give more than 2 muffins worth, then I think these mini loaves are too small.
