Excellent Information in a redundant style
This book goes into details for each 1,000 ft.ship and covers all in the same manner . This isn't bad untill you realilze the ships were all built in the same decade with the same economic conditions prevailing, effecting all in the same general way. They were all constructed as the direct result of the building of the Poe Lock. A chapter on the setting of the times and conditions and the arrival of a 1,000 ft vessels on the Great Lakes would have covered the topic. I would have liked to read details about ship happenings. For instance what about the Indiana Harbor hitting a light house??? What happend here; somebody was responsible. It gets one paragraph including the size of the hole in the ship, location of repairs along with the total cost. Ship demensions, loading equipment, capacities, ownership and name changes are this books forte.

Very good but wish it had more detail.
A good read but wish it had more detail. Like maybe diagrams of the interior or showing how the self-unloaders worked. Also, just has black and white photos.

Excellent details on the US Lakers.
Excellent details on the US Lakers and history of each from construction to now. Next I hope to read about the Canadian lake ships.

Stories about each of the thousand foot lakers and their history.
I liked the information about the development of these huge ships and some history on each one. The pictures were Okay but the paper could have been better quality and colour photo's instead of black and white would have been nice. More technical details on each vessel would also have been good but it was interesting.
