I don't know about regular food coloring but they sell gel coloring just for this product which isn't expensive and would probably not work best

Q: What would I have students use to make a line on a gingerbread house?

A very small tipped icing tip that would go on a pastry bag (you can get clear ones that you can throw away)

Q: Can I use this to ice cookies?

Yes, you can. You could also use it to make decorations on the cookies.

Q: Why is it $13 here and 6.98 in the store????? why a $7 price difference for one tiny jar??

I question that myself. It is sooooo small it's not worth the price difference.
