I like both the movies on this and I like the fact that I got them in a complete set so I don’t have to fiddle with looking for the two movies separate

Bittersweet for lifelong Joe fans
We finally got the live action movie we always wanted, but certainly not the one we deserved. I bought this set to share with my 12 year old son, because I'm a giant man-child who still likes the comics and the cartoons, but it's hard getting him into either of those due to being so dated (the cartoons anyway, the comics are still awesome. He's just not into comics). I've already seen the movies and knew they weren't very good, but figured he might like them more, not having all the history to compare them to, which was correct. Much like old dorks who hate the Star Wars prequel and sequel trilogies because they weren't what they grew up with, the kids still love them, so I was going on that logic. I was sort of right, he didn't hate them, but they're still a hard sell. As a huge fan and lifelong collector of the G.I. Joe franchise though, I still wanted these. Thank god they came bundled at such a low price, because that's the only way I could suggest this set with a straight face. Rise of Cobra was absolutely terrible in almost every way. I'm surprised it even allowed for a studio to green light a sequel, but we'll get to that soon enough. Besides completely butchering the storylines and the characters we've all come to know and love for 30 years (at that point), it just felt really forced and sloppy, squeezing in lines like "Yo Joe" and "knowing is half the battle" wherever they could, as though they were trying to service fans to make up for the complete disregard of everything else. A relationship between Baroness and Duke is ridiculous. Scarlett and Rip Cord? Totally stupid. Ripping off the Phantom Menace for the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow fight scene... Umm... I know it's Ray Park and all, but he already did that (albeit on the other side)? But if you ask me, the mishandling of Cobra Co-mindbender was the biggest offense. Or maybe it was Snake Eyes' lips. I'm not sure. The Paris scene was kind of cool though, I'll admit, just so you don't think I'm a complete hater. On to Retaliation, where they desperately tried, and kind of succeeded to clean up the mess with the help of some big name actors and a better screenplay. Re-watching it after the 6 or 7 years since the first time, I have to say, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I remembered it being. In fact, I actually kind of liked it. In the biggest missteps where Rise of Cobra fails the original story, Retaliation eliminates most of that by not bringing certain characters back, and then threw in tons of stuff for the fans that I actually appreciated a great deal this time, because it was done much more tactfully. I liked the Rock as Roadblock just because I like the Rock (though I believe Flint would outrank him, that's nit-picking), Firefly (Ray Stevenson) was portrayed extremely well, Cobra Commander was way better the second time around, Jinx was cool, RZA as Blind Master was a nice touch, Zartan’s role and the transition of Storm Shadow... it just felt more like the comics to me, and like a better movie all around. Flint's character was written poorly, and I probably could have done without Joe Colton (Bruce Willis), although he did a fine job and added the comic relief. And even though I'd have liked to see some more of my favorite characters, my keeping it a smaller team, not only could they focus on the story better, but it also made it more like an issue of the comic, where they'd send out small teams to handle individual missions. Oh, and the whole mountain scene was absolutely phenomenal. After the dust has settled, I dare say perhaps Retaliation has earned its place in the collection as more than merely completionism. I only wish they'd led with this kind of treatment. Maybe we'd have gotten more, even better ones. Though I hear there's a new Snake Eyes movie coming out, I don't think it's attached to this same series. I pray they brought in some real fans to help guide its direction. TL;DR: the first one sucked, the second one was alright. You should really only get this set if you're like me and absolutely need it for completionism. Your kids won't like it nearly as much as you'd like them to. Probably don't bother. And now you know.......
