Does the grilling disconnected from the base (for cleaning)? Can the base be cleaned in the dishwasher?

yes, the metal grilling area including plug-in releases from the plastic base to facilitate cleaning....dishwasher cleaning, though seemingly possible, would perhaps be ineffectual.....most of the cleanup is relatively hard burned residue which may be impervious to dishwasher spray activity....

What are the dimensions of the grilling surface alone (not including the base)?

It's about 11 x 15. We love the grill. We live in a condo and can't use an outdoor grill. This grill gives a great flavor. We use it for everything.

Is the cooking surface non-stick aluminum or is it ceramic?

It's nonstick, not ceramic. We use it a couple of times a week and still love it!

Is this made in Japan?

the label on the device says "made in china".....japan, with its high cost of living, outsources the vast majority of its consumer electronics and electrical manufacturing.....however, the excellence of the engineering and manufacturing on the eb-dlc10 reflects well the japanese quality tradition.
