Superman: Action Comics Volume 4: The New World

Comic recomendable.

The Superman Revenge Squad can't kill Clark yet! Not until he....KNEELS...BEFORE...ZOD!!!
Dan Jurgens continues writing gold on Action Comics. Plus, he gets to make a lot of callbacks to early 90s stories he worked on.Story: This book picks up immediately following Superman: Reborn with Clark venturing to his Arctic Fortress to view the history of his life on the Kryptonian crystals so he can see if there is any discrepancy between his memories and what's on record. Then, we go into the main story which involves a mysterious hologram of coding bringing together some of Superman's deadliest enemies to form the Superman Revenge Squad!! They manage to acquire the Oblivion Stone from Superman's Himalaya's Fortress and their leader, Hank Henshaw, uses it to reform as the Cyborg Superman! They then head to Belle Reve to "complete" their team by rescuing Zod from the clutches of Waller. Jurgens put together a really sweet team of baddies here, many of whom Jurgens has written several times. I can't help but feel that this whole book is sort of Jurgens doing a career reflection. There's some really cool battles and the book certainly lives up to its name, Action Comics. That's one thing Jurgens has not failed us in. He has certainly showed us he can craft a story around action pieces. Zod of coarse refuses to take orders from anyone, completely convinced of his superiority over everyone. Zod only agrees to go along with Henshaw's plan so long as Zod acquires the Phantom Zone projector for what he alludes to is the retrieval of his army that's been imprisoned there. Well...Jurgens is sure to give all of us quite a few surprises by the end of the story, including what happens when Superman activates the Fortress's Omega protocols, some epic battles, a mystery guide telepathically helping Jon Kent in the big battle, and a very intriguing future for Zod...and others. I have to admit, I'm quite interested in where Zod's story is going to go from here! There's so much that's been done with him in the 2000s, and I hope that we're not just going to get a repeat of a big Superman arc from the mid to late 2000s, but comics show that there are virtually an endless amount of stories to tell.Art: Everyone here does a pretty good job. Ian Churchill is one artist that I'm gaining interest in. I really like his style. Zircher does most of the art here, and while I favor artists whose pencils are a bit crisper, Zircher does some great work here. He does tend to draw Superman with a scowl on his face though. I've never read a comic with Viktor Bogdonovic serving as penciller, but I rather enjoyed his style that I'm assuming he's carrying over from New Superman. Viktor's style reminds me a little of Michael Turner and Greg Capullo. The coloring here is bright and vibrant, not quite as much as The Flash title, but it's beautiful to look at, nonetheless. I always love Gary Frank's covers at the end of these volumes. We're also treated to some variants by Mikel Janin, who's quickly becoming one of my favorite artists. He just draws everyone as they ought to appear.Overall: Some high octane action, with plenty of twists and turns, reveals, and some intriguing setup for a possible mega arc make this book a must get for anyone who's made it through everything Superman in Rebirth. I know some people prefer total closure at the end of one of these collected volumes, but with the book mostly ending on a cliffhanger, we now have opportunity for a really big arc to go down, possibly a limited series. Jurgens also writes Superman very close to the brilliant writing of Peter Tomasi's Superman in the main title. They match up well. I hope Jurgens continues his epic run on this title as long as he wants to do it. I'm having a blast reading it!

Solid continuation of the Superman Rebirth...
While Jurgens’ dialogue still feels a little dated, this continues to be a solid book. Jurgens does an admirable job in streamlining the continuity post- Superman: Reborn, and the Zod story, aside from a slightly anticlimactic ending, is one of the best superman arcs since rebirth started, setting the stage for future stories well. The artwork is also really good.
