A Great Sam-E Supplement (but Your Mileage May Vary)
I've always battled mild'ish depression and mild-to-severe anxiety. Many supplements may help ease depression and anxiety, but it often comes at the cost of having side-effects (e.g. unusual bowel movements). Such is also the case with Sam-e as many folks report a counter-intuitive increase in paranoia and/or anxiety. As the popular saying goes, "your mileage may vary" as the effects of Sam-E vary based on each individual's internal chemistry. Three years ago, I started taking the Nature's Made brand (very commonly found at a local pharmacy) for a short period of time. Folks online reported that effective combating of depression required about 800mg to 1600mg per day in order to see an effect. I was on this regimen for about two weeks and became EXTREMELY PARANOID AND ANXIOUS about the most irrational of things. About a month ago, I re-researched into Sam-E again. New information and user testimonials had come out over the last few years about differences in brand effectiveness, daily dosage, etc. As I alluded to before, some folks may need a high dosage like 1600mg to see a difference. However, I noticed that I only need a fraction of that amount in order to feel better. I started off with Nature's Made and took about a much lower dosage at 400mg (200mg in the morning and 200mg in the afternoon). I felt great after the morning dosage, but the increase in anxiety crept up shortly after the afternoon dosage. No paranoia this time around though. This forced me to think about scaling the daily dosage back to 200mg per day (once in the morning only). After doing so, I started feeling great! Additionally, I have been taking my Sam-E with a B-Complex in the morning. Per Dr. Andrew Weil (which you can search online and read for yourself), he recommends the following to be used alongside Sam-E: "Take a daily multivitamin supplement that provides 400 mcg of folic acid, at least 50 mg of vitamin B6 and 50 mcg of B12 (along with the rest of the B-complex)." Many folks also recommend that you stay very hydrated as another means of helping Sam-E do its job. Here are my experiences: -- I definitely feel more alert throughout the day and have had a happier, more optimistic inclination about the day-to-day stuff in life. -- Similarly, I notice that I don't need as much coffee during the day. Before Sam-E, I needed at least a few (large) cups per day. Now, one cup of coffee in the morning is more than enough. -- I definitely feel as if I sleep better and have more drive to get out of bed in the mornings. Like the Chicken or the Egg argument, I'm sure that getting a more restful night's of sleep is also helping me feel better throughout the day. -- I used to constantly fall asleep during Movies and TV shows in the early evenings. Sam-E has given me an extra boost of energy where I don't prematurely fall asleep. -- Although many have said that Sam-E doesn't drastically help with their anxiety, I noticed that by taming depression, my anxiety has also been reduced. For example, I have felt an increase in confidence; the extra spark of energy has allowed me to give off a healthier vibe towards others (e.g. constant smile, better at holding eye contact, less stuttering/flustering). -- I have also felt motivated to complete my (often mundane) day-to-day tasks, such as cleaning the house, doing the dishes, cook dinner, etc. Similarly, at work, I have seen an increase in successfully meeting my daily responsibilities since taking Sam-E. The downside to Sam-E is that it can be very expensive and not covered by any insurance since it's a vitamin supplement. This forced me to research into cheaper options for Sam-E. Luckily, the Jarrow's brand is highly raved by other Amazon users AND the price is substantially less than buying the Nature's Made version at a local store. I have felt the same positive effects from Jarrow's as I did when using Nature's Made. The only thing to beware is that a few people have said that the effects ARE different between the two brands (both positive and negative) - again, your mileage my vary. Also, Sam-E isn't a "magic bullet" solution. Sam-E can only do so much if you're out of shape and/or are sleep deprived. For example, I am a late-night owl and if I only get a few hours of sleep, I wake up feeling groggy (just as any normal person would). You have to be realistic about Sam-E; it can enable you to feel better but the problem won't entirely go away unless you choose to make other lifestyle changes. *BEWARE OF THE PACKAGING/SHIPPING* The last thing I wanted to point out is to beware of the packaging. I ordered my Jarrow's 200mg directly from Amazon and the packaging was EXTREMELY POOR; the vitamins were stuffed into a small bubble mailer that was clearly not protected from getting "squished." When it arrived, the box inside was compressed into half its size (presumably from having other packages sit on top of it) AND it caused half of the blister packs to break open (leaving the vitamins exposed into the air). As other reviewers have mentioned, Sam-E is very sensitive to air/moisture changes, so I was forced to throw away any tablets that were already exposed. FYI, other vendors will put the vitamins into a small cardboard box stuffed with large air bubbles to protect the item from getting "squished." Granted, other vendors are more expensive but I'm also not throwing away wasted tablets. Although I won't dock stars away from the product (since it's not Jarrow's fault), it is absolutely something that buyers need to be aware of. Note: I am not a licensed clinical professional. Cannot recommend enough
Mental illness runs deep in my family and I've been on antidepressant medication for decades after struggling with mood since puberty. When my lovely, happy tween daughter suddenly took to her room crying unable to express the depth of despair that seemed to grab her out of nowhere, there are no words for how helpless and overwhelmed I felt. After taking her to a highly-recommended adolescent therapist, she agreed that she was likely experiencing more than just normal adolescent blues and expressed concerns about some of the dark thoughts she was starting to have. I know medication has saved my life and I was committed to doing whatever was indicated to treat her, including antidepressant medication. However, the therapist assured me that she was keeping a close eye on my daughter and felt I had some breathing room to try some supplements before starting medication. Again, I'm NOT anti-med, but the rapid brain development at her young age and some bothersome side effects prompted me to try supplements first. I researched and decided on either 5-HTP (+actually tested and used extensively in kids for other indications, -potential liver toxicity) vs. SamE (+proven efficacy and first line treatment for depression in Europe, no know SE's at any dose, -no clinical trials in kids). I decided on SamE and researched that Jarrow was a good brand for efficacy and purity. I expected a slight and gradual improvement in her mood after a few weeks. Two days at 200 mg- not much change, 2 days at 400 mg and she's markedly improved, then up to 600 mg and I could not believe what I was seeing. She was almost the same kid as before and other than a few blips (she is still a teen), she's been that way for a few months. So much so, it has me wondering if I should work with my dr. to get off cymbalta and onto SamE. A few points to consider- I'm a nurse and pretty knowledgeable about depression due to my own struggles, so I will try not to get too deep into the science but I've always suspected a genetic mutation (will test when I have $200 to spare) that causes poor methylation. Neurotransmitters like dopamine and seratonin require methylation to be available in the right amounts and there are some new treatments being researched and even sold that target methylation pathways. Sam-e targets methylation and I'd read that it helps it work better if you take a methylated folate supplement. Omega -3's, vitamin d, and Mg also have demonstrated effects on mood. So, I am also giving her a quality supplement that contains these too. We are also fortunate enough that we can pay to send her to a good behavioral therapist. I'm sure that those things are also helpful but the SamE is def. the thing that seemed to give her the immediate and noticeable boost in mood. The only negative is that it's expensive and, needless to say, insurance won't pay. But I'll take another job selling my plasma or driving for uber if I have to, because i think it's sparing my daughter the acute suffering that I've experienced first hand and seen claim the lives of people I love. FYI- I know this is a product review, not a self help article but I know ppl with depression will be reading this looking for hope. If this is you- do WHATEVER it takes (including prescribed meds or conventional treatments) to get help!
