I've been using Elixirs since they first came out. I've tried all the copycat coated strings out there, and none compare to the longevity and tone of Elixirs. No, they do not replace uncoated strings in all situations. If you are in a studio in front of good condenser mics, playing quality, fresh, uncoated strings will sound better hands down, no contest. If you are gigging live using piezos, or SM58's, or about any other pickup I've tried, you can't hear any significant difference. You won't save any money, but you will cut down on the hassle of constant string changes. If you're learning guitar, or just noodling around in your spare time, these are perfect. More time playing, less time changing strings or suffering dead tone cause you don't want to deal with the hassle. How long they last depends on how you play. If you pound away with a pick it'll be a lot less than if you finger-pick with your nails and finger tips. In any case, they last a lot longer than uncoated.

Love the strings, great sound and feel out of the box, heavier strings so had to slightly adjust the truss rod. Would recommend them for intermediate to experienced guitarists.
