Excellent comprehensive book. Thorough and Understandable.
Probably the most comprehensive and common sense book on autism I have read out of about 8 books. I actually listened to the book on audible, mostly while driving or doing housework and was not bored at all. Even parts that didn't relate to my child (like info on non verbal autism) were interesting. I purchased the actual book because I felt it would be easier to reference information from the book rather than the audible version saved to my icloud. Promotes comprehensive approaches to assisting people in the spectrum from diet, to medication (extremely helpful info on meds, my child is currently not medicated but should the need arise I feel far more prepared to disc uss options with a doctor having read this book) to sensory aids like tinted lenses and just good old fashioned parenting, consistently expecting polite behavior with consistent, appropriate consequences. Temple shares her own experiences as an autistic as well as experiences gathered from the masses of people on the spectrum that she has met and collaborated with.

This is a great book for anyone to read especially parents and grandparents of a child with autism. My grandchild has autism and now I understand why he does certain things and what he is thinking and how much he hears and understands what people are saying, even though you might think he is just sitting there being alone. Autistic children are really smart, they just need a chance to show you. Listen to them, understand them and help them in any way you can. Let them know you are there for them!

GREAT read for both the parent and the child. There is a great deal of insight for the caregiver as well as practical advice for individuals on the spectrum. A beneficial read for both myself and my teenage daughter.

THIS IS A 3RD EDITION PUBLISHED IN 2014 - CHOCK-FULL OF NEW & UPDATED INFO!!!
Absolutely TERRIFIC Book!!! Should be known that this book is a 3RD EDITION AND HAS LOTS OF UPDATED AND ADDED INFORMATION THAN ITS SOFT-COVER PREDECESSOR. The "how-to," very practical information is invaluable! Thanks Temple for your ability to give insight into the world of autism that it so very difficult to decipher for us neurotypicals!

Fascinating Reading
Since I've been interested for a long time in the brain and how it works, Dr. Temple Grandin fascinates me. A highly functional and literate person with autism, she has played a major role in helping parents and educators understand autism and how to help kids (and adults) with autism. She gives people hope.
