A hard plastic. The valve is very stiff, but the handle seems to be sturdy enough to handle the stress.

Can you put a garden hose directly on the spigot to use to drain the barrel?

Any garden hose will screw on to this spigot.

Are these brass spigots food grade?

Any suggestions for how to add a screen to this to prevent debris from clogging the spigot? In use at a public dog run “pool”.

Probably a simple solution would be to wrap a small piece of screen on the end of the spigot (that’s in the “pool side” and tie it down with wire. You can secure ithe wire onto the threads. If you want it more permanent you could glue or solder it to the threads. Hope that helps.
