Utopia Kitchen Countertop Compost Bin 1.3 Gallon, Stainless Steel, Black

*Update:* Sorry, it's been slightly longer than six months since my original review but I wanted to come back to change my review from four stars to five because even after consistent daily use this bin is holding up great. No rust, no loosening of the handle, and best of all no leaking at the seams like I was afraid might happen. We've only changed the charcoal filter three times but never notice any odor from the can. We also noticed that the charcoal filter also effectively stops any maggots from growing...that was a gross but definitely illuminating discovery made while waiting for a new charcoal filter order to arrive. My best guess is that it actually stops the flies from getting in to lay eggs....*shudder*. All in all I 100% recommend this compost bin. Original review from 1/21/17: The bin's simple stainless steel design is sleek & attractive. It's a great size to sit on our 6" kitchen window sill with only a little over 1" hanging off & it's very well weighted so it stays in place without any danger of tipping over or falling off. It will hold at least a week of our kitchen scraps in a 2 person household & the charcoal filter is amazing for knocking out all smell. The inside of the can is very smooth so it's easy to rinse out any residue. I only have three cons but they aren't deal breakers. One, the biggest one, is that the seams on the bottom of the can are visible & though it seems well crafted, I'm a bit concerned it may end up leaking over time. That could just be paranoia from prior experiences though, so I'll try to update in 6 months or immediately if it starts to leak. Secondly, the finish does show water splashes & finger prints a bit so I have to wipe it down thoroughly every couple days to keep it looking nice. And lastly, if the bin gets too full it starts to press up into the charcoal filter in the lid so it gets it kind of grimy & can even push it out of its slot if you keep pushing the lid on when the bin is full. Simplest solution....don't be so lazy & just go empty the bin before it gets to that level. I just need to keep training myself & my guy to do that. ;) And I might actually cut a small piece of flexible metal screen to slide into place to keep the food from actually making contact with the charcoal filter. All in all it's a good purchase & we're pleased with it.

I have two of these. They are fantastic. 🎉🎉 I use one to store kitchen scraps for my chickens and my worms. And I use the other for scraps that go to my compost pile. There is no smell. Easy cleanup, lightweight but sturdy, and they look nice on my counter. I love them 🎉

I love this little compost bucket! It is the perfect size for under the sink. The lid fits well, and the filters are terrific for keeping odors and fruit flies at bay. The filters do get gross after a week or so of use, but we did rinse them out at the sink several times before having to actually replace them. Even washed out, they still worked very well for keeping odors in the bucket and not in my kitchen.The white outside has held up very well after being used for about eight months now. Our bucket regularly gets taken outside to feed our kitchen scraps to our chickens, has been dropped multiple times, and thrown in the back of a UTV all without any major dings or scrapes. The metal side walls of the bucket are nice and thick, so have maintained their original shape without any extra remolding by me. The handle is sturdy, perfectly sized, and hasn’t fallen off once. I would definitely recommend this product for your kitchen scraps! Great value; Great quality! (Sorry for the “well-loved” bucket pictures!)

2ND UPDATE: It has now been more than 6 months and I have had no issues with it. Yes, it has a couple spots where the liner bag leaked and gunk discolored the metal slightly, but it is inside so no problem. I had trouble with those little orangey-brown flies on one occasion because I have a bad habit of leaving the lid cocked to facilitate lifting it, but once I used clorox clean up to disinfect everything, including the filter, and made sure to close the lid completely all the time, that problem went away. UPDATE: Two days later the smell started to get through the filter, so about 8 days to do so. Obviously, I won't let it go this long anymore. Also, I figured out I don't have to take the lid apart to remove the filter, just reach in the opening, bunch the filter up and take it out, put it back in the same way in reverse - problem solved! I have had this for a week now, and I purposely did not empty it this whole time. I wanted to see how much smell the filter could handle, and I am quite pleased. You cannot smell anything until, of course, you take off the lid. I have egg shells, cabbage leaves, orange peels, carrot and onion ends, banana peels and coffee grounds in it so far, and no smell has gotten through the filter at all. Great! I have some clear plastic twist and tie gallon storage bags that are exactly the right size to use as liners, so cleaning should not be an issue. So far, the only downside is that I cannot take the lid apart to take the filter out. Maybe when I really need to do so, I will figure it out, but it should be easier than that, one would think. That is why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars

As a gardener I always want to compost but recently moved to a home where composting outside was not going to be an option. Bought a kitchen counter composter (also five stars) to handle the job for me. This item was a HUGE help. I can add to it as I go through meals or meal prep and when it's full turn around and put it all into the composter for processing. Love that it looks good on the counter, easily accessible and there's no smell. Thank you for such a great product!

This is my second kitchen countertop bin. The first one had a plastic bucket inside of it and even with the charcoal filter inside the lid, the smell with the top closed wasn’t sealed nor did it keep the fruit flies away. In time the plastic lip around the top edge broke which made it impossible to have a seal when you put the lid on. My new compost bin is worth every penny spent. It’s very sturdy, the steel color is contemporary. It’s very easy to clean. I love the thick filter inside the top. Once you close the top, you cannot smell your compost. It’s too early for fruit flies so I cannot comment on that just now. Oh, and this compost bin holds much more than my last product.

Use it everyday. The nicely weighted stainless steel and modern design makes it look good sitting on the counter and it also fits well under the sink. Lid has charcoal filter inserts which can be used for quite a long time and are easily replaced. Strong handle makes it easy to carry over to my food preparation area, which may end up being in different places in the kitchen depending on what I’m making. I do place 3 gallon compostable food scrap bags inside simply because it’s easier for me to remove and tie and throw them into my organic recycle bin when full. I put a folded paper towel at the bottom before I put the new food scrap bag in, and at least rinse the can out and dry before putting a new bag in mainly because I don’t fill it up except every couple of days and some condensation from the bags can result. Takes only a minute. But using a bag is not necessary at all if you want to just dump the contents into the trashcan directly or compost pile if you have one, because the can is easily washable like any stainless steel pot or bowl. Lid is very tight so no smells are released plus never have had any unwanted creatures finding their way into it. Ordered a different brand/type originally that rusted. This one still looks brand new and it is one of my most-used kitchen accessories. Thank you!

Sehr hübsch und super Größe. Nachdem ich mir die Rezensionen durchgelesen hatte, war ich etwas hin und her gerissen. Aber der Eimer entspricht absolut meinen Erwartungen und meinen Ansprüchen. Optisch macht er einen sehr hübschen Eindruck und vom reinigungsaufwand ist er super. Einfach auswaschen fertig. Den Härtetest hat er geruchsmässig ebenfalls mit sehr gut bestanden. Ich habe Essig-Gewürz-Gurken hineingegeben und ihn extra Tage lang in der Küche stehen lassen. Da kam gar nichts an Geruch heraus, erst wenn man den Deckel hoch nahm. Der Deckel hat im übrigen keine Gummilippe und schließt nicht dicht ab, denn es sind ja Löcher im Deckel, die mit der Kohlematte versehen sind. Es kann also gar kein Unterdruck entstehen, sodass man sehr wohl mit nur einer Hand und ohne Kraftaufwand den Deckel anheben kann, um mit der anderen Hand die Bioabfälle einzufüllen. Die kohlematte lässt sich mit etwas Geschick gut herausnehmen und die neue wieder einsetzen. Ich denke, wenn man etwas aufpasst, dass der Rand sauber bleibt und der Deckel nicht vollkommen schmutzig wird, wird der Eimer kaum Probleme bereiten und sehr lange halten. Da man ihn heiß abwaschen kann und er keine Unmengen hineinfüllen kann, muss man ihn sicher nicht in die Spülmaschine stecken. Als Fazit: meiner Meinung nach ist dies ein wirklich guter Komposteimer und sein Geld auch wert.

We have only had this a few days but so far are very impressed. It is very solid and well engineered with a quality finish - better than expected and as good as if not better I hoped for which doesn't happen very often!! It looks great on the counter top. It is much higher quality than some bins I have seen. The sides are silid, and not flimsy, it is well balanced, not top heavy, and it has a brushed effect on the main bin section which looks great. The lid fits really well. I twist the top of the compost bags and knot at the side of the rim to stop them slipping down as there isn't a hoop or other fixing, but I think this is perfectly fine. NIce and simple with no parts to lose or break. A big elastic band could be another option of you find it awkward to tie knots. Bins with holes in the lid like this are so much better than ones with solid tops as moisture does not build up inside, so there are no nasty drips when you lift the lid up. Yay! And the charcoal filter is very effective at stopping smells from onions etc. I am not sure if I will go to the expense of buying more when the one supplied and the spare run out, but probably will get a couple for the the height of summer. And for me, the BEST PART is having no plastic inner bucket or paint on the outside - just pure metal, keeping additives and pollution to a minimum (I hope). Plus, for me, the inner buckets always seem to get in the way. I would prefer UK made bin, but this seems to be impossible. If it were 10% bigger it would be completely perfect but the size is actually fine. It does say "Utopia Kitchen" on the lid in small-ish letters, which I think could be moved to the side, but on the other hand if I had made something as nice as this, I would want the logo to be seen as well! I have been looking for a bin like this for a long time and am really happy with it. I hope this lasts as long as it looks like it should! Hurrah!!
