Great learning tool, easy to assemble!
My little scientists loved this!!! I will include a detailed list of pros and cons so you can have a positive experience also some tips on what we did and observed. I'm not sure why there aren't more reviews on this!!Pros:1. Lights up! Not many other any habitats that I have seen come where it is lit up to really see the ant details. (I'll cover the negative later)they light up all across the bottom maximizing what you can see.2. Complete kit, this came with the complete habitat. This includes the house, gel, trees, magnifying glass, decorative rocks, instructions, tunnel poker, live ants, USB adapter and plug.3.Easy to assemble! There were no magic hoops to jump through to put this together! The "feed gel" came in the habitat ready for use.4. Fantastic instructions. Not only is the box labeled well, but the inserts and instructions included were fully detailed step by step for establishing your habitat.5. All the ants were alive, active, and even had extras in the tube!6. All the extras: the magnifying glass was a hit. All my children from ages 9 down to 2yrs was able to actively participate in decorating and engaging in the habitat and they have enjoyed waking up seeing new tunnels being dug out.7. No feeding or watering required. This habitat is self-sustaining so you can set it up and leave it.Although there is a feed hole on the top so you don't have to take the lid completely off and risk runaway ants escaping.CONS:1. The USB port and connecting unit on the ant habitat isn't the best. It is sensitive and finicky. Maybe a reinforcement to secure it to the unit more stable or different plug I included a picture of what I'm talking about. In reality it really doesn't harm the function of you leave it still and not moving it around all over.2. When setting up the habitat you take a little short straw tool (also pictures)and poke eight 1" holes to help your ants get started, but like herding cats they just did their own thing and our ants used their own jokes and not a single hole we poked, haha)3. Our grass seeds haven't started sprouting after several days but I'm not sure how long it's suppose to take anyways4. Not made to grow, there is no queen to sustain the growth so eventually they will all die off.Tips: READ INSTRUCTIONS thoroughly before starting and it clearly has this printed on the insert.Be sure you put your ants in the fridge to put them to sleep before opening the tube and transferring them to the ecosystem so you don't get bit!Keep the papers! There are great questions and interactive ideas that you can share as a family. Like did you know the ants sleep in piles?! Did you know that they will and can fight each other? We lost a few this way when they would gain up on each other! Did you know they can easily climb the smooth walls like Spider-Man?! Did you know that they transfer the gel to one another and work together as a unit?!You should check out their mouth pinchers adm how they carry the gel!!!!We are on day 4-5 and daily they are digging out new tunnels. It's super cool. We've been able to do a mini homeschool lesson on ants, talking about their bodies, what they do, how they live, why they do what they do and this habitat helps my kids actually observe and not just listen to a book or watch a tv. They have been able to engage in the learning. They also include a webpage to order more ants if you need them. I did receive this at a discount in exchange for my honest opinion and I wasn't compensated in anyway, this is solely our experience as we dove into a super fun any ecosystem!!I hope this is helpful and if so if you can click "yes" I would appreciate it as I strive to include detailed reviews over things I buy. Let me know if you have questions! HAVE FUN!!!

Ants died and gel grew mold
My 6yr old was so excited to get the ant farm as a reward. Ants arrived alive and all seemed to be ok. The grass seeds were tough to “plant” in the gel, and after 1 full day, the ants stopped moving. Most died and at this point there might be 1-2 still barely alive. I feel bad they died. Mold started growing on the gel as well. Very disappointed.

No
Ants died within 1 day. & I don’t think they liked the gel at all. I’d go with a sand ant farm not this gel.

A great learning tool!
I was surprised at how much I LOVED this... my kids did too but the whole thing is so interesting! The ants took about a week before they really started tunneling. But they all have a personality. Why do they pile all the red rocks together? Why does dexter always carry ant heads around with him? We took the top off a lot and it seemed to excite the ants into a frenzy to try and escape. We never use the light. The gel makes it easy to see everything happening in there. Our grass grew really fast. We haven't fed them a single thing as the gel sustains them. The mold that people are seeing is actually just the seeds from the grass breaking down. It goes away all on it's own. My 5 year old and all of her friends loves to look and watch. Weve had these little guys for about a month and half now and it was well worth the teeny investment!

Looks good -works poorly.
Supplied ants were all dead on arrival. (Picked up from mailbox the same day as delivery and waited for conditions as noted to order.)Substrate develops fungal growth that has killed any ants I have supplied in only 2-4 days.

Fake Advertising. Not what I paid for.
This product did not come with ants, or a coupon for ants. The advertising is a lie, and it is worthless to pay more for this product. The ant farm plugs in instead of being battery operated, and the rocks are smaller than advertised. I waited almost 2 weeks in shipping time, just for the item to arrive with instructions for a tube of ants and an and farm BUT NO ANTS!!!!!Not only did the ant farm cost twice as much as any other ant farm on the market but it also didn't include the center piece of the kit. The farm is shipped directly from the manufacturer but doesn't even come with a discount on ants like other products for half the price do!The lack of care put into this product is remarkable, and the advertising is a direct scam.

Awesome. Totally worth it.
Just got in the mail today. It was an 80 degree day and rained and was worried about the ants. Seemed to be a ton of reviews stating half or more were doa. Well this sat on my front porch in the rain and all but one were alive. They were very active and ready to dig in.Also the lights and everything work great.Love the grass seed cant wait to see it grow and the little palm trees are a nice touch. This may be targeted for children but I love the heck out of em. Super interesting to observe.

Cute ant farm but not for us
My 5 year old and us couldn’t manage it and the ants did seem to like it. Gel was weird.
