can i use an external hard drive for storage?

Yes you can use an external hard drive for storage. Just get one of those usb to sata cables/converter but look for high data transfer rate and you will be good to go. A programme called gparted is included in raspberry pi os that will easily partition and format. I use SSD drives for this due to there low power usage and faster data transfer. If you use a HDD drive you will have to power it separately. One thing I now do since raspberry pi os ( easy use operating system) has updated, it lets you run a SSD with the operating system on it and space for storage dependant on drive size as well. I do this for a few different operating systems instead of a SD card. Especially retro gaming as well as using the pi 400 as a desktop computer with raspberry pi os.

This question needs to be asked to either Amazon or seller if marketplace. Not here as it just comes to people who have purchased not sold.

Can you run a full Bitcoin node on this computer...it doesn't seem to have a large hard drive to store a full copy of the blockchain on?

The cpu and system has no enough compute capacity. Hence, it will become useless. I mean. If you are thinking to use as a miner machine, it won't work for bitcoin. You can use for dogecoin, shiba, among others. However, you will get arou 1 or 2 dollars a month for each device.
