All the early singles and the hits from one of Detroit's greatest vocal groups, The Falcons. One of the acts that was most influential in the coming of soul music and often credited for cutting the first true soul record with "You're So Fine". Members of The Falcons included the soon to be major soul stars, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd and Sir Mack Rice who went on to write "Mustang Sally". Fully detailed liner notes cover their entire career.

Great Singers Not The Best Material
Enjoy most of it and would recommend if you like underproduce music written by young amateurs mostly. Good but could be better with better material and recording facilities.

Too Much Missing From Their 1956-1961 Output
There were several vocal groups calling themselves The Falcons back in the late 1940s/early 1950s, one of which cut a single record at each of the Savoy (late 1940s) and Regent labels (1951), another that had two releases at Flip in 1954 and one at Cash in 1955 on the West Coast, and still another that had one release on Carl in the mid-1950s.The Falcons covered here were one of the early Detroit vocal groups that emerged in 1956 and, through the years, would experience multiple personnel changes while registering five nationally charted R&B hits for several different labels into 1966. And while just three of those would cross over to the Billboard Pop charts, one assured them of everlasting fame, that being their first hit, the eternal You're So Fine, which many musical historians cite as the first true Soul offering.Bob Manardo, Eddie Floyd, Tom Shetler, Arnett Robinson and Willie Schofield recorded Baby That's It/This Day on Mercury 70940 in 1956 but by 1957, Monardo, Shetler and Robinson had made way for two former members of The Fabulous Four, new lead Joe Stubbs, brother of Levi Stubbs of The Four Tops, and Lance Finnie, along with Bonny "Mack" Rice, formerly with The Five Scalders. They recorded Can This Be Christmas?/Sent Up on a small Detroit label owned by their manager and Floyd's uncle, Robert West (Silhouette 521), and then had This Heart Of Mine/Romanita come out on another of his labels, Kudo 661, in 1958.Early in 1959, You're So Fine/Goddess Of Angels initially came out on still another of West's labels, Flick 001, but this time word of their talent has spread and so the reaction of listening audiences was wide-spread as disc jockeys latched onto the sound of that A-side. So it was leased to the larger United Artists who released it on their subsidiary Unart in April 1959, climbing to # 2 R&B/# 17 Pop by May on Unart 2013 (in 1962 it would be re-released as United Artists 420). West, meanwhile, hung onto You Must Know I Love You/That's What I Aim To Do (Flick 008) in the hopes of striking gold on the backs of that hit, but he simply didn't have the financial clout to properly promote/distribute the record and so it failed.Meanwhile Chess, where they had recorded several unreleased sides in 1958, decided to take advantage of the hit and called them to their studios to re-record Just For Your Love, and while it charted nationally, it did so only on the R&B listings, reaching # 26 in December 1959 on Chess 1743 b/w This Heart Of Mine (it was also released as Anna 110).All those just mentioned are in this volume but from this point on, it falls apart in terms of their singles into 1961, the period supposedly covered by the CD. For example, the record put out by Unart around the same time as the Chess release, the non-charting You're Mine/Country Shack (Unart 2022) is omitted, as is their third hit, The Teacher, which finished at # 18 R&B in August 1960 on United Artists 229 and its B-side, Waiting For You. Needless to say, you won't find their 4th and 5th hits either, I Found A Love which ended up at # 6 R&B and # 75 Pop Hot 100 in April/May 1962 on Lu Pine 1003 b/w Swim (billed as The Falcons & Band (Ohio Untouchables), with lead vocals now taken over by Wilson Pickett, and Standing On Guard, a # 29 R&B/# 107 Hot 100 Bubble Under in November 1966 on Big Wheel 1967 b/w I Can't Help It, with lead vocal by Sonny Monroe.Their other uncharted releases in the period supposedly covered here but which are omitted are:Hurry Arthur Murray/Chicky Chop Chop - Contour 301 - 1959 - billed as The Newports but really The Falcons (Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd, Lance Finnie, Willie Schofield and Bonny "Mack" Rice)I Plus Love Plus You/Wonderful Love - United Artists 255 - 1960Pow! You're In Love/Workin' Man's Song - United Artists 289 - 1961The sound quality is quite good and there are detailed liner notes which you may find interesting. But there's simply too much missing from 1956 to 1961 for me to go over 3 stars.

Poor track selections
As another reviewer has pointed out, this compilation is sadly short on their post '59 period following the success of 'You're So Fine'. Tracks such as 'The Teacher', 'Pow You're In Love', 'Country Shack' and others for Unart/United Artists definitely should have been included here instead of many second rate items. Why the compiler has concentrated on their much earlier period, when they were still trying to find a style is quite unbelievable. With maybe 3 or 4 exceptions, their early recordings are forgettable. The originally unissued songs which are taken from their 90s Relic CD, sound much better on that issue than they do here, where they have received an overdose of NR. Rates only a 'D' from me. This could have been a great CD with more thought and care!

A Great Collection of Individuals.
Heard the title song back in the early sixties, and given the bands line-up took a gamble and bought the CD. Well worth the purchase and it has helped enhance my perception of Artists from the late fifties to early sixties.

You're So Fine
そして、後にソロ・ソウル・シンガーとして成功したEddie Floyd(エディー・フロイド、57年~60年にかけて在籍)や、Wilson Pickett(ウィルソン・ピケット、60年~63年にかけて在籍)らの出身グループとしても知られています。 クリスマス・ソングの3「Can This Be Christmas」、メロディアスなバラッドの8.「This Heart Of Mine」、スロウ~ミドルの10.「(When)You're In Love」、かっこいいアップ・テンポの12.「Please Don't Leave Me Dear」、タイトル通りドリーミーで素敵な21.「Goddess Of Angels」などの曲が個人的には気に入りました。ただし当時はレコード・リリースされなかった13曲の内、いくつかの曲の音が歪んでいて音割れして聴こえます。(5,9,11,13,14,15,16など)曲目、試聴はダウンロード版にて確認できます。
