Totally Excellent Guide!
Shirley Halperin and Steve Bloom's "Reefer Movie Madness The Ultimate Stoner Film Guide" is a cool compendium to sit around smoking a joint (although I preferred a bowl or a bong) and decide what movie to see that night, or just to read and goof on the movies you've seen. The book is arranged maybe a little too orderly for the true stoner. It lists movies by categories such as Comedies, Dramas, Sci-Fi Fantasy & Horror, Action and Sports, Animated, Music, and Documentaries, and within the categories alphabetically. In each category you can find just about any movie made within the past 40 years, as it's the author's contention that in the last 40 years pot has come into the movies as a subject, reference, activity, or if it's just cool to watch while high. Some of the movies that caught my eye were "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "Plan 9 From Outer Space," "THX-1138," "The Falcon and the Snowman," "Dude, Where's My Car," "Fame," "The Banger Sisters," "The Doors" (only a 3.5 marijuana leaf rating, and for some reason in the drama section and not music). Each film has a smart and concise synopsis of each film and remarkably enough gives the reader a good sense of the movie. As I was reading the synopsis of the movies I was remembering each movie and favorite scenes mentioned in the synopsis. The guide offers ratings on the 5 marijuana leaf scale, icons to denote whether the movie in question has a pot reference, nudity, cocaine, alcohol, bongs and a couple of others. Next to each movie is a little quote of stoner interest from the movie.Interspersed throughout the book is a lot of goodies for the readers, including movie picks of such luminaries as Snoop Dogg, Jason Mraz, Margaret Cho, Wayne Coyne, Ray Manzarek, and Melissa Ethridge. There are also sidebars with interesting interviews such as with Jeff "The Dude" Dowd the real life model for Jeff Bridges character in "The Big Lebowski" "The Dude."Whether you get high or not "Reefer Movie Madness The Ultimate Stoner Film Guide" is an excellent guide to movies, and an excellent reference book to have on hand.

Excellent stoner film guide with one glaring flaw in my opinion.
This is an excellent guide with just about any movie that slightly references marijuana or if it's an integral part. Just about any movie you can think of is covered from Reefer Madness all the way to Super High Me. The only thing that would have made this book perfect for me (and why I docked a star) is that there is no master index. I wish there was an index that just flat out listed every single movie that was included in the book. It would be awesome if there was just a flat out list I could use as a guide when searching Netflix Instant Streaming, but alas I have to go through the task of flipping through the book to look at the different titles. Otherwise overall it's a good product.

Get High And Watch A Movie
The idea behind this book seemed like a winner, though I admit that my imagination might have taken over when I read the book's description. The premise is that movies are assessed based on their entertainment value while stoned or their appeal to those who are in an altered state, which was not what I expected. I expected this would be an appraisal of drug films, not films of various genres. All of this wouldn't effect the product's rating had the book's contents been compelling. The reason for putting films like "The Fellowship of the Ring" and other mainstream movies into the book weren't very convincing and the writers' treatment of drug/teen exploitation films is downright condescending. There doesn't seem to be much respect for the old B-movies here, and that's off-putting when you consider how those old films are still echoed in films today. There are some good entries here and the cutesy icons for the ratings are mildly amusing, but I can't see many people picking up this book and learning much of anything new or enlightening.

Pot smokers paradise
This book is "The Ultimate" guide to movies for stoners. What a great reference and a fun and well thought out read. If you like watching movies baked, and most of us do, this book is a perfect companion.
