Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner’s Dictionary

Most reference works are dull and boring, and are not fit for leisurely reading. This book is the opposite. It is a fun and pleasurable read. Being a learner's dictionary it has short and concise definitions. The way the definitions are phrased greatly facilitates understanding and memorization. The definitions are phrased as if the writers are talking to you. Literally. They use the word "you." Here are my made up example definitions for the word "verbose": "If you describe someone as verbose you are saying they use too many words." "If your writing is verbose it is too wordy." Obviously the real definitions are better than my two examples (I am not a dictionary editor, after all). Also, I used singular "they." No self-respecting language expert would use singular they in a serious work, such as in a dictionary. But alas, I am neither self-respecting nor a language expert.The layout is nice, the print is readable, the font is in good taste. One drawback is: This book is huge and heavy, making it hard to lounge on the couch and read for any prolonged period. It will tire your arms out. Holding this book is like holding a brick. In a pinch it can be used for self-defense.For comparison: I also bought the Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's Dictionary. This Collins COBUILD is better. I have no motivation to read the Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's Dictionary. I can say unabashedly that this Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner's Dictionary is the best learner's dictionary available for purchase. It's one of the best dictionaries, period. Reading a little bit from this dictionary each day will make you a little bit smarter. It will also give you bigger arms. A plus if you're a guy. Not only will you have brains, but brawn as well.

Aunque sea edición de tapa blanda, es precisamente lo que lo hace más útil que otros diccionarios de su clase. Collins Core representa la definición perfectamente de cualquier palabra que busques. Tan autorizado como Oxford o Cambridge. Si me apura, me gusta más la edición de Cobuild.
