Carving Classical Styles in Wood

Still a great and recommended purchase
If you do any architectural wood carving, Frederick Wilbur's books are a must to purchase. More aimed at the intermediate to advanced carver, they are full of ideas to keep you going in the craft. His instructions on the projects he covers are limited, leaving the reader to have some previous understanding and knowledge of carving. Still a great and recommended purchase.

Inspiring for new and intermediate carvers!
This is a great source book for patterns and inspiration, as well as filled with technical tips and help. My 15 year old son loves wood carving, especially high relief, naturalistic and classical styles. He is really enjoying this book!

Masterful carving techniques
This book is an excellent guide to traditional carving. It presents a history of where carving developed. Ideas of carving throughout Europe, the Vatican and the United states. Fred is a native of Virginia so it is natural that he would use one of the richest areas of classical caving at the University of Virginia. It is well know that Jefferson was a student of the classics, Palladio's drawings and designs. But more than that he breaks the designs down in a simple to follow way that with some practice anyone can accomplish. If not a wood worker it is still a great book from a historical perspective. He has accomplished three books and all are an excellent guide. Fred is a professional carver and has carved both for private, as well as government and ecclesiastical clients. He has done work for the Senate, the White House and many historical institutions. I think it is even safe to say that Fred even with his accomplishments has never been anything but humble in his talents even with the clients he has served. This book focuses more on the traditional carvings related to furniture where his other two books focus on the Architectural designs of interior and exterior elements. all three of his books a woodworker or historian would find beneficial.

Advanced carving in Classical styles in wood
This is one of two books by Mr. Wilbur on carving. It is not for the novice carver as he assumes a basic knowledge of carving techniques. There are other books which are much more specific on carving techniques than this one. However, it does explain in fair detail a number of examples of Classical carving and, as such, is both interesting and valuable.

Excellent guide to classical architectural woodcarving
This book supplements his earlier work, Carving Architectural Detail in Wood. Both are exellent resources to learn how to carve classical architectural detail. Illustrations and text walk you through the steps and tools necessary to carve beautiful motifs. Wilbur has traveled and photographed extensively to bring to you examples of fine work; then he demonstrates the techniques necessary to bring them to life on your workbench. These books move you beyond the beginning carver stage to volutes, fans, Doric and Corinthian designs, multiple level flowers, and garden pineapples. If you are tired of beginners books, go to these.

A classic in the making
Everything Fredrick Wilbur writes is so dense in meaning and practical value that I can imagine picking out nuggets of wisdom for years from the lovely clear(which seem basic, but which are not) text and photos. The more one looks the more the wisdom speaks.
