Can you tell me the approximate use of the pebbles? I’m looking for somewhere around 1/8 to 1/2 inch or 3 to 5 mm

The stones are nowhere near 1/2 in. Maybe 1/8, or 1/4 but no bigger. For my succulents can't be to big or heavy. Hope this helps.

Some reviews said the gritty mix are very dirty and the color (composition) differs from the photograph, Are the problems solved?

I've bought the mixed colors bag twice now, for mixing into my supposed "succulent soil" to improve drainage and drying speed, and it's looked like the images both times. I will probably buy more.

Can I plant succulent clippings (no roots) in this alone, or do they need soil, too?

The stones are only part of a Succulents needs. They need Succulent Soil and Perlite as well. I mix 45% Soil, 30% Perlite & 25% Rocks.

The nicest black shiny coarse sand, but it is a bit more spendy

I don't need a lot of it, so the extra cost is okay. It is a great color, looks very nice as a top dressing. As long as you don't need more than a couple cups, this is the best. I knocked off a star for price...but I did come back and buy it a second time, so it was worth it to me.

I bought the 5.5lb bag of Bonsai gritty mix, and I will DEFINITELY be back to buy more! Pic of my hand next to an empty bag for reference to size (close to a 5lb bag of flour - packed full), I include this info cuz I wasn't sure what 5.5lbs was going to actually be! The size of the actual substrate is ideal and the color combo is so pretty whether it's filling the pot or just a topdressing for plant! It needs to be RINSED thoroughly in a collander outside (don't let the rinse water go down your regular kitchen drain). Once rinsed it's ready to use and IM SUCH A HAPPY CUSTOMER! Soon to be repeat TYSM! Highly Recommend!
