Tascam DR-05X 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Stereo Handheld Digital Audio Recorder and USB Audio Interface (Black) with Deluxe Accessory Bundle

Purchased to add audio to video from action type camera. My first attempt failed because I dutifully set the hold button and didn't notice it didn't go into record. When I get it right it has excellent sound and Is quite easy to edit into video. It works with my remote microphone so the recorder can be protected when on the boat.

The DR-05X IS AMAZING. I had a Zoom, loved it, lost it. Bought this one because of a YouTube review I saw and WOW. I'm sorry but I love it more than the Zoom I had. A lot more. The audio on this thing WITHOUT an external mic is SUPERB. The audio through the clip-on mic is SUPERB. The audio through my Rode is SUPERB. I love this recorder. Tons of excellent features. I also bought a windscreen that slides right over the top when using the built in mics, and it makes direct narration even better. It has a threaded hole on the bottom to be mounted on a tripod or rig, I added Velcro myself to give it even more versatility on the go. I'm buying another one today in case anything ever happens to this one.

I use the Tascam DR-05 to record rehearsals of my original jazz fusion Quartet. I shut off the condenser function, and set the volume low enough so the input doesn't overdrive/distort. The recordings are clear, with the instrument volumes balanced. After editing out time prior to songs beginning and ending, I upload them to my laptop, where I can then email them as WAV or MP3 files to my bandmates. Amazing that something so compact can provide such high quality!

In this case it seems you really do get what you pay for. While some of the other mic/recorder combos would do in a pinch for interviews none tested sounded quite as good as the DR-05/VideoMicro setup.The preamp on the the DR-05 is a bit noisier than I'd like but it cleaned up nicely in post and could likely be avoided with a powered mic at line-in levels. The media could not be loaded.  This unit is easy to use and the sound quality (some induced white noise, especially while recording WAV files) is very good for my aplication. The battery life is awesome, and it has lots of built-in features that one can adjust for better sound quality. The feel is good for the plastic used, but at this price and performance, I can live with it.

I purchased this to record the music being plaid live during a wedding ceremony for the couples wedding video. I have been doing videos for many years but have never used s separate sound recorder. This DR-05 recorded the piano, guitar, and singer very nicely. without it, they would have just been background sound from the wireless mic that was on the groom who was some distance away from the singers. I will be using this on all my future videos. The sound is clean and clear, the features are many and the price is right.

Still a good recorder. Excellent sound. Pretty good options and features. One thing though, you cannot just plug it into your camera and expect it to record like the Zoom H1. You have to go into the settings and turn on the mixer. This bundle includes a lavalier mic that works great with or without the DR05 and the cord is long enough to actually be useful. Like 10ft or so. Pretty happy with it. Only thing missing is a foam filter but you can pick up a pair on Amazon for like $2-$3. Would have been cool if one was included though.

Both its built-in mics and the lav mic that came with it are great! It's great for its price, and I'm happy with its quality so far. FYI, if you're using earbuds that have a remote on the cable, the output may be quiet. Hold down the button on the remote and you'll be able to hear the line out audio as it should sound. It's just a bug with the recorder, AFAIK. Other than that minor issue (just use different headphones, problem solved), very great product!
