Product Description A 30-something southern woman searches for love, despite the burdens she carries with her. Director Joey Lauren Adams Starring Ashley Judd, Stacy Keach, Wally Welch Special Features: Full Frame Format. .com Come Early Morning comes as a mid-afternoon career correction for Ashley Judd, an actress oft dissed in the years since her fresh, breakout performance in the indie gem Ruby in Paradise. No mystery there: what other lovely and talented woman has appeared in such a string of crummy serial-killer movies? By redemptive contrast, Come Early Morning suggests a de facto sequel to Ruby 13 years down the road. Again Judd limpidly portrays a young Southern woman, Lucy, trying to get free of a debilitating heritage--dysfunctional family on every side--and find her way to some kind of contentment. Lucy makes more bad decisions than Ruby did. For her, early morning isn't so much a new day as the hour when she faces waking up with one more guy she couldn't care less about. She plans it that way, because commitment is something she flees with grim resolve. But she also knows that the program isn't working for her. The writing-directing debut of another offbeat actress, Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy), this is a beautifully observed film, free of condescension toward its Arkansas folk, with an appreciative eye for the plain beauties of small-town life and semi-rural roads, and a sharp ear for three-cushion dialogue. "Did I miss Easter?" Lucy's housemate quietly cracks when she finds Lucy dressed for Sunday-go-to-meetin'; Lucy's trying to reconnect with her estranged dad (a magical, almost wordless performance by the wonderful Scott Wilson), who's started attending "a new holy-roller church." She also meets a newcomer (Jeffrey Donovan, excellent) who ought to be Mr. Right ... but nothing quite plays out according to formulaic expectation in this movie--among the most satisfying of 2006, which most people are going to have to discover on DVD. --Richard T. A must see for any fan of Ashley Judd and Jeffrey Donovan
"Come Early Morning" is a really good romantic movie for us girls. Jeffrey Donovan is one of those actors that is so believable that you will want to turn to your guy and say "That's how it's done!" :) For you guys; my husband watched this movie with me, he did like it, but "It is definitely a chic flick." Especially, when Ashley's character gets into a fight with another girl in the bar. Her character is a little unsure of herself, but with the background, it's understandable that she would choose to play it that way. Over all, I really enjoyed it. Joey Lauren Adams did an excellent job of writing and directing. I would recommend it.

Ashley Judd is a huge favorite of mine...
This movie didn't make huge box office, but I can tell you, she is one helluva actor. She's brilliant and her story could have been mine, with the emotionally distant indifferent father. She sought her dads' love, through being too out there and had no guidelines growing up, and not enough love so she looked for love in all the wrong places. So for me, or anyone like this, this movie packs a wallop of understanding familial dysfunction. I LOVED it, for it SPOKE TO MY LIFE.

memorable
I loved it. Ashley is so real and I can so relate to this movie. The pain one battles within is dealt with in many way's. Lucy chose alcohol to help numb the pain and although she desperately needed to feel loved the pain within kept her from trusting anyone would truly love her. I thought the song "I'm just an old chunk of coal but I'm gonna be a diamond some day" said it all.

Like the movie very much. Seems to relate to a lot of men and woman who are in bad senarios and wish for something better. Acting was great too. Love Ashley Judd

Genuine Story - Excellent Film
This movie is simple and genuine. It's framed as a romance but not a shallow or easy one... it takes a simple and direct approach to a topic that typically is talked about a whole lot without really saying anything useful or meaningful. The romance genre is generally designed to help people feel good like a drug does rather than to ask real questions about human relationships.Stories like the one in Come Early Morning are rare in mainstream movies. This film is a rare find.I see some other reviews saying that they liked the film because they are Ashley Judd fans or romance fans. Those are personal preferences, not objective reviews of the movie. This movie doesn't exist to serve personal preferences. It exists to explore and understand what happens to human beings when things go seriously wrong... and to point out that it's more the rule than the exception. Everyone knows someone like Lucy... and if they don't, it's likely because they ARE her.
