EMAXAir Compressor Pump - 5HP Splash Lubricated Pump with 18CFM & 155 Max PSI - APP3Y0518S

Pump advertised as 75 decibals. Switched my pulley to slow down the rpms as per Emax. Installed the pump and measured the decibals with a meter with me standing two feet in front of the compressor. Decibals measured between 90 and 95 decibals. I put three rubber hoses on the air filters and built a manifold which adapts to a quiet tubular vehicle muffler and it may have dropped the decibals to 88. It still sounds much louder than my old two cylinder pump. My old pump had a significant amount of suction at the air cleaners even being that I have been using it for 27 years. I was considering buying a new Emax 7.5 hp 80 gallon compressor but can't afford it. If the 7.5 hp is any bit as loud as this pump its a no deal. I will probably keep it because my old pump had much oil blow by but am sadly disappointed with the noise level. Emax Youtube videos do not line up with this pumps noise level. I wish I could find a local Emax dealer and hear their compressors first hand. I do have to add that this pump did appear to build pressure relatively well. I'm just trying to avoid confrontations with angry neighbors and hearing damage.

Review of the EMAX Compressor APP3Y0518S 5 hp 1-Stage Compressor Pump.First and foremost this compressor is clearly a product of China. The unit came in a cardboard box with a wooden shipping frame around the top, bottom and corners. There must have been some oil in the compressor when shipped and the box must have been turned over because the box and contents were saturated with oil. No problem, the unit comes with 2 quarts of oil and I spent about an hour cleaning the compressor. The oil level sight glass was only partially screwed in and has cheap seal ring. No problem, I carefully tightened the sight glass up. Use caution here, apply some thread sealant and do not over tighten. The three air filters are of the most minimalistic design with poor seals as well. One of the filters had loose scraps of assembly, (not packing) material inside that would have been sucked into the compressor head and made quite a problem for the reed valves. No problem again, I cleaned out the loose pieces of plastic and carefully assembled the filters. If you look at the product picture, you will see ¼” copper pipe and fittings connected to the three cylinder heads. This is the unloader system and it comes to you in kit form. There are two pieces of straight ¼” pipe and a bag containing the unloaders and couplings. You may or may not need these unloaders depending on what type pressure switch / pilot valve you have on your system. No problem, I have pipe binders and flare wrenches to make a nice job of this.With the compressor on my bench, I rotated the flywheel as it hung over the edge.That is when I noticed that the flywheel had a wobble in it. Looking at the top of the flywheel from the side it moves 1/8 of an inch in and out from the compressor as it rotates. This was not from a bent shaft; but it is caused by a misaligned bore when the flywheel was machined. This run out should be measured with a dial indicator graduated in thousandths of an inch.This unit has so much that I can use a tape measure. Big problem! This one I cannot fix. This run out will most certainly cause undue vibration and most likely premature failure. I just received this unit and I’m not sure what course I will take at this point.Last note, all these issues are on the outside of the compressor. Did the same attention to detail and quality go into the internal parts?SMM 06.24.17

Shipping took forever plus a week, but item finally arrived well packed in a wooden crate with everything that was supposed accompany it, except instructions/user manual. The manual I found online wasn't much help with the one thing I'd not encountered before, the head unloader system. Wasted some time hooking that all up only to figure out that I didn't need it, so removed and used the supplied plugs to seal holes. My understanding is that this unloader system for applications where motor runs constantly, like a gasoline engine. I do know that the head unloading technique already in place functions well without all the extra plumbing, which leaked badly anyway. The air filters have metal housings, which is nice, but seemed really restrictive at the inlet and did nothing to reduce noise, so I ditched them too. The crank turned smoothly, flywheel rolled true, and none of the oil supplied has leaked from cylinders, but sight glass leaks tiny bit. Pump works really well powered by older 5 hp electric motor with properly sized pulley, fills 60 gallon tank in minutes, and has yet to run hotter than expected

Had to replace all the oil, unit was not sealed. Oil was everywhere. Seems to work well. Had to contact Emax once via email. Excellent quick response.
