The whistle is small and is easy to add to a keyring for safety sake
The whistle is small and is easy to add to a keyring for safety sake. It is louder and cuts through loud ambient noises better than a Fox40 or equivalent whistle. I've used it in a basketball gym while a game was occurring, on a city street and Outside in a forest. Unfortunately this whistle takes practice to use most effectively as opposed to other sports whistles. You need to practice blowing so that using it properly becomes routine. If you wait for an emergency to blow it you would be disappointed at least, tragic at worst. A Storm whistle is much louder and functions much more intuitively. The Storm is much much larger and is not something you could hang on a keyring because of it's large size, so it wouldn't be as available as the Howler or its equivalent. I feel the Howler should be on every keyring because it can be used to provide a louder sound and would attract attention more effectively than a human voice. In outdoor situations you can continously blow this for longer periods than you could a human throat. It should be obvious that any whistle has limitations when it is raining or in a thunderstorm and in Fog or Vog. In those situations I've found a Storm whistle to be more effective. The whistles I've mentioned are NOT TOYS and should not be given to young children who may not know when to use them. With that caveat the Howler whistle would be an excellent survival tool, easily carried, small size for small hands and louder than other sports whistles.

Plenty Loud But...
I got these whistles for my emergency supply kits for home and auto, for me and family. I like the fact that they are pealess, that is, they don't have that little pea-sized ball of cork or plastic inside that makes the whistle work. In that sense, they are supremely reliable and will work as they should so long as the holes are not plugged or obstructed. The noise they let out is attention-getting and positively ear-splitting. These are good attributes and exactly what you want in an emergency whistle. Also, they are well-made and thick-walled.The issue I have with them is that I really had to blow hard - too hard, in my opinion - to get these to sound off the way they should. In some situations, say if you were injured or trapped in a structure after an earthquake, it may not be possible or desirable to really fill up your lungs and bear down on this thing. While recognizing that there is some relation between air pressure and volume it seems that there should also be a way of generating an effectively loud signal without maximum pulmonary effort. As a reference, I am a fit and athletic man in his early 40's and not a frail asthmatic. So, I have to give these whistles excellent marks for quality and for a sound that you could probably hear for miles. I give them fewer stars, however, as some in need of a rescue would not necessarily have the capacity to really give their lungs a workout on this whistle. I'm not just considering what I would be able to do with this whistle, you see, I am also considering whether my wife and child would be able to use it.

Buy it... seriously.
Over the years I have purchased multiple Fox40 micro whistles. I am not overly concerned with the color, so whatever is cheapest i will buy. I have used it in the field (camping/hiking) and on the field (coach/ref). I purchased one for my brother-in-law to keep on him as he is a Florida police officer. The immense sound it produces can be powerful. Other Fox40 whistles may have only two tones when blowing. I have found that the 3 sounds truly resonate over noise. For the price, you should buy a few and stash them wherever you can. Car, pack, hunting/fishing gear, person, etc. No whistle other then this Fox40 meets my standard

Generic whistle
This is a pretty good whistle. However, this same (made in China) whistle is available in more colors and for cheaper, from other sources.

don't waste your money on cheaper products if you're life depends ...
Mandatory must bring on any long distance hiking trail for myself and my wife. People often wonder why we bring a whistle and I always tell them to yell as loud as they can just to see how long they can do it. This is more for a emergency type equipment while hiking, no one intends to get lost but at least people will hear you if there is a need for rescue. This product is wind proof and rain proof, don't waste your money on cheaper products if you're life depends on it. Have fun on the trails. --JY

A must for anyone's Emergency Medical Kit or Backpack Survival Kit
SOL really puts out a high quality product. I've given these out to several friends and family. Most of them have put them on their key chain or backpack. They're super loud and I would not recommend blowing on them in close quarters since you will hurt your ears. The howlers are made of very durable plastic that is virtually indestructible. Plus in an emergency situation this whistle could be heard at very long distances vs. a human voice. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a high quality survival product.
