Epson WorkForce DS-1660W Wi-Fi Flatbed Scanner with ADF

Purchased quickly without too much research however very happy. Simple enough to get up and running plus the document feeder is speedy. Scans are of the required quality and it fits in a large rucksack which was easy to take abroad.

I ordered this product on the basis of good reviews and for use in a small office with a modest amount of scanning and archiving, but the adf feature was the main reason for choosing this scanner over other budget end small business flatbeds. The first problem I had was with installation to my dell laptop running windows 10 professional. There was simply no way to get the laptop and scanner to communicate with each other via USB; after several frustrating hours online with Epson's support team, I was basically told to boot up windows in safe mode and eliminate all my installed apps one by one to find which one was causing the problem. (Other advice I was given include trying a different usb cable - but the one that comes with the scanner appears to have a non standard plug on the end that goes into the scanner , so where to get that?!) After several re-installations of the drivers and trying completely disabling my antivirus and firewall and then having a go, I still got nowhere. As a last ditch effort I installed the drivers on my brand new Surface Pro 6 running windows 10 home. Bingo! or so I thought. The software, computer and scanner were in communication and I got a quick scan done from the glass plate (flatbed); then I carefully fed it an a4 sheet to scan via adf... First two sheets while fed very carefully into the adf feeder, were both chewed up. My attempt at a two sided scan went through for the first scan and then got completely stuck and chewed up inside the feeder mechanism when it tried to scan the other side... So I guess the problem is that Epson has not yet quite perfected the paper feeding mechanism. This scanner is not for you if you want smooth, trouble free operation in a small business or office environment. Its much too finnicky and temperamental. Business owners want something that works well under duress and for technophobes - and does so first time. Mine's going back. But I do feel its a pity as I've had epson scanners before and I cannot fault the scan quality. So, buyer beware!!!!
