Surrender All: An Illuminated Journal Retreat through the Stations of the Cross

This is amazing from artwork to meditations. I really liked this book and will use it often. The only thing I did not like was that the artwork was cropped and you lose context. I ended up buying all the stations on another site so that I could contemplate the whole picture. Her art is very beautiful and thought provoking.

I can't wait to dive into this during Lent! The artwork is done in rich vibrant hues brimming with symbolism. The format for each station follows a pattern: the station is announced with accompanying artwork, followed by a brief scripture passage and a reflection linking past to present. That is followed by three sections inviting the reader to respond in a variety of ways. There are always journal prompts to ponder and an action step you can take to "turn up the light." Finally, there is a prayer. This book is written in such a way that there is something for everyone-whether you are more "visual" or literary-minded, and no matter your schedule. You can engage with this if you only have small moments available or if you are inclined to do a deep dive.

The artist conveys so much through her paintings and her thoughtful writing. The focus is on what Jesus has done for us, his love and acceptance of us, and how we can surrender the areas of our lives that block his work in and through us. After reading my copy, I went to Ave Maria Press and bought 4 more for gifts. I'm not Catholic. Even though the writer of this is Catholic, she focuses on Christ in a way we can all benefit from. I highly recommend this book!

While it would be an appropriate prayer companion for any time of year, I believe that Surrender All is an especially powerful resource for Lent. The illustrations are quite moving and speak to the depth of Christ's suffering. The reflections are inspirational and can lead to deep prayer. Meanwhile, the journal questions prompt the reader to delve more fully into his or her relationship with Christ. Even though I had wanted to read this journal for some time, actually poring over it was an experience beyond my greatest expectations.
