I thought I was buying one with a lid, and I do miss the lid that I thought I was getting. With that said, this device has worked very well in all respects. One reviewer stated that she thought the inside was not smooth enough. But I needed to crush my wife's pills to a fine powder, and I believe the minute machining grooves actually helped me in accomplishing that.

I admit to being a crazy dog lady and of course my dog has one very hard pill I need to grind to be able to split it. I had an onyx pestle that started falling apart and chipping into the mortar which was definitely not working. This is a very strong mortar and pestle and works quickly- I love it! Seems like it will last well.

I have used granite and ceramic in the past and find they do a little better job.

I usually like to make fresh while cokking. In indian coocking we mostly use the Ginger and galric . Everything its very hard to smash them . this mortar is very helpful to smash them and gives a fresh aromoa felling when you grind them .
