Excellent book
*First thing, I haven't read all the book yet. So I'll come back to my review and complete it when at that point.**Secondly, english is not my first language, so I might have a few mistakes in my review. This book is very well written. Rather easy to understand, even for a person who's first language is not english. But in my point of view, what's most valuable in this book is the clear global picture that it draws of what it takes to create and implement an automated process. So as the author teaches you the whats and the hows, he always keep that whole perspective alive somewhere in the back of your mind. There aren't many books that can achieve that. I am very used to learn from books, so I know what I mean.Another VERY good thing is that at every beginning of a chapter, there is a troubleshooting case exposed and solutionned. That is very helpful for novices to get a glimpse of how to think like an automation specialist.I like it so much that I really wish there is a book with just troubleshooting cases available. It's like getting field experience from a book... a dream for every beginner like myself. This book is easy to follow (with lots of illustrations) and it seems very complete. The ERRATA from the book's website is very detailed. So it's a very good point. There is a little drawback though; there are no answers for the exercices in the book... but at least, there are exercices. I wrote to the contact on the publisher's website to ask if there was a way to get (or buy) those answers, and they said that the reason is that students tend to just copy the answers rather than doing the work for themselves. I respect that. All in all, I would recommend this book, without hesitation.--------march 16th, 2010.Ok, here I am after one full year.I've read almost the whole book, and it just confirm my first review. For some aspects, it's even better than I first thought (like the good chapter on sensors and a few others).I really wish the author writes another one like this.Would definitely recommend this book.

buy this book
this is the only PLC book you will ever need. This book starts with actual basics, such as scan time explanations for safety etc. This book reads like a novel and has information worth its weight in gold in it. Don't be like me and buy 10 other PLC programming books before you buy this one. Just buy this one. As a controls engineer and mechatronics engineering student, I can not tell you how valuable this book is, and I have only read the first 60 pages since receiving it today. The item arrived packaged professionally and in the plastic wrap brand new without a single blemish.

Excellent resource
Book arrived on time and in new condition. The text itself is well structured and informative. Very helpful that it covers brand-specific program/software differences in addition to industry standards and general theory.

very good text. Plenty of explanation
This is a very, very good text. Plenty of explanation, lots of examples, exercises, etc. I'm only two chapters in so far but it is easy to see this will serve my need to get up to speed with ladder logic, function blocks and plc design. The only problem I've seen so far is that the text, due to the ink and paper combination, smears if you happen to drag your digits on the page. Will come back and update this review after I've had a chance to really get into the book thoroughly.Update:Now I've had a chance to get into this book a couple of comments are due. With about 4 chapters, and a good portion of the 5th chapter, completed I can say this book is as good as I'd hoped it would be. There is enough material on each major PLC platform to give one a good introduction to PLC programming. There are plenty of end of chapter exercises also. Using the book with the PLC platform you will be working with, if possible, is very helpful (for me this is the Scheider Unity Pro platform). However, one could also make do with one of the simulation platforms to work through exercises (TRiLOGI and ISaGraf come to mind for this). My purpose for this text was to become a more proficient PLC programmer, and this book helps with that task, but it also has good/great info about modules, scoping projects, etc. Again, all-in-all, a very helpful text on PLC programming.
