Price and performance... its got them both.
Just picked up this after doing some comparison with other units... mostly I was looking for speed and size. I dont need an enclosure or any dock, just a simple no-frills, no-fuss design that would allow me to mount my external 3.5" HDDs. Well, this unit fits the bill to a T (and very few do). First size: when plugged in, this unit is 2.75 x 1.25 x 0.50 in. with a 36 in. attached USB cable. I like that the cable/power come out the side too. Next speed: Ill say that I was hesitant to try USB 3.0 products after I bought a certain external HDD from a company I wont mention, (hint: they have a gate to the sea). Anyways, I was getting at best, ~70 MB/s transfer rates on the mechanical hard drive, even though I had other 7200 rpm units in SATA that Ive benchmarked at 100 MB/s+. Well, with this thing I had a laptop SSD transferring to a spare (old) SSD and transfer speed was ~250 MB/s!!! SSD to external 3.5" mechanical 7200 RPM drive was ~140/110 R/W. You read that right, this puppy performed pretty much at the limit of the drives! One thing I did to get those speeds was set the drive in device manager to "better performance" for the SSD.Anyways, Im definitely happy with the purchase and if youre on the fence, give it a try. Ive only had it for a day so I cant attest to its long term use, but so far, its making me a believer of USB 3.0 again.

Worked on one computer but not another.
This device did not work on my Windows 7 Home Dell XPS 8300 desktop with an H67 chipset and an add on PCIE USB 3 card. It would not work on the USB 3 ports on the card or the native USB 2 ports. It would install drivers for the hard drive but nothing else happened. In Disk Manager the drives I was trying to access appeared as a "healthy partition" but the drive was never assigned a letter and did not appear in Explorer. I have a USB 2 drive enclosure that this computer reads perfectly. It is merely a PITA to switch drives in and out of. And it is slow of courseOn a whim I tried the device on a Dell laptop and it worked exactly as expected with SATA and IDE drives. The laptop might be 6-12 months newer than the desktop. It has native USB 3.I did some research and found that there are a number of people reporting that their computers cannot access drives with a device like this. I never saw a universal explanation or solution. Some fixes that worked for one had no effect on another. In short, Good Luck!

Performed the job well and quickly
This did what I had hoped for, which was to remove data from a laptop hard drive. This Dell Latitude laptop suddenly refused to get past the diagnosis screen with Windows 7. Internet searching did not offer any promising fixes. Seemed the only way to save my data was to remove the hard drive and copy the data I needed. It took some researching to figure out what this was called. When I found it, I ordered it and was able to copy my data from the laptop hard drive. . Since the laptop belonged to the public school and we turned it into the tech department for repairs. They said the hard drive had failed. Here I would disagree. I do believe it was more likely a corrupt file that caused the error since it ran up to that diagnosis screen and because I was able to remove the data I needed. Also the tech did not say anything about recovering files needed. Seems that's an error of a novice technician. That's a bad oversight. A less competent user would have turned in the laptop and lost all of the customized files and data.

Second time was the charm
First try, it didn't work. I plugged the adapter into my computer, turned it on and the hard drive started to spin and the computer seemed to be loading drivers. But, my Win 7 didn't recognize the device. I turned off the unit and came back later. The second try, I turned on the adpater first, then plugged it into my computer, then it worked! Now I can transfer files between my old Western Digital 80G IDE hard drive and new computer. I am now satisfied with the purchase. Thank you for a functional product. Don't know what happened the first time around, though.

I wish I would have found and bought something like this sooner!!
This has come in handy for me on several occasions. I use it with a computer running Windows 8.1 Home Edition 64-bit. For me, it's been simple plug-and-play to read what is on hard drives and be able to write data to them. It essentially turns internal hard drives into external ones. I only wish I would have found and bought something like this sooner!! I should note that I don't use the software that came with it (seems I haven't needed to). I did install it as an Administrator, but because whatever hard drive I plug in comes right up in my Windows File explorer, I can easily access the drive and it's contents right from there. I was also able to figure out that I needed to remove the jumper on cable select drives, in order to access them.

fills a need
Works as advertised. The only downside is that it runs a little slow. On a laptop, you have no choice. On a desktop, it works faster if you open the case and plug the second drive directly into the motherboard without even using the USB adaptor. Of course this is in a case where you are trying to clone a disk. For other uses, you might not want to do this. When used to clone a disk, plugging directly into the motherboard took less than half the time of using the adaptor.

Product works well, but slow to mount drives on OS X.
The product works well...once the drive mounts. I have run into an issue where it seems to take quite a bit of time for the device to "fire up" and have the drive visible to the OS. I have tried to run it without the power adapter and with the power adapter; both without any difference in performance.I have not tried this on a Windows machine yet to see if this is OS specific so I cannot comment on the performance there. All of that being said, once it mounts the drive, the performance is great and functions well. I would give it 4 or perhaps 5 stars if not the for the mount delay issues.
