Is the needle always exposed, or is there a storage compartment for the needle?

Yes there is a storage compartment for the needle.Take out the needle, then move out rubber valve. Put the needle inside and the rubber valve on top of it, then close the cap.To use pump again you need to place the rubber valve under the needle in exact position as it was before. If you see that pump is losing pressure while in use: simply upend the rubber valve.

Does this work on a rubber playground ball?

Our ball pump will work with any ball that has the standard ball valve. Usually playground balls has the standard valve, so it must work.But, if you are not sure, you can sand photo to our email and we will confirm specially for your ball.Sincerely, Paul
