A retitled release of a great entry to the world of Appleseed.
I did love this book, but I didn't realize I already had it. Originally, Dark Horse had issued it as the "Appleseed Databook." It did have a few new pieces of art, as well as the original release covers for the original series. For those who have gotten into the series and missed the Databook, it features a story detailing Deunan and Briareos on the trail of a terrorist bomber. The book also features an extensive rundown of the timeline history of the world of Appleseed, explaining how the world broke up into the new countries vying for control of it, as well as definitions and explanations for the technology, weapons, and various other items. It also showcases the roughs for several pages from the series, and some unused covers and pin ups of the characters as well.

a musthave, (some draws that were missing in the book n°5 are in the "illustration and data")
When I get those 2 books per post ("hypernotes" and "illustration and data"), it was the same magic moment than when I was discovering and buying appleseed for the first time in the ninetees : Appleseed is a masterpiece, anthologic SF - Cyberpunk comic book. Masamune Shirow is a visionary genius. You found the same ingredients than in the books Appleseed 1>5, I'm just sad the stories are shorter than in the books 1 to 4, because you never want to stop reading this level of quality : draws, scenario, action, detail level, mecha design, character design, immersion, politic, anticipation..."illustration and data" contain sketches, notes, chronologic story detail, and a complete story that appear in the book 5 yet. But "illustration and data" also contain quality colored and b/w illustrations that were missing by the time I was buying Appleseed, and "artbooks" were edited by I missed to buy them at this moment and never found them again. Maybe they are."hypernotes" contain a longer story that NOT appear in the books 1>5, sketches and "notes".Bothes are a little smalle than the books 1>5 but inside is the same quality. If you are a fan of Masamune Shirow, Appleseed, japanese robotic, cyberpunk.... this is a musthave !For the french reader : I bought them in English because I didn't found them in french.

If you have none of the others, Get this one.
Very Interesting and informative, all the background for the world he created and the characters, places and things in it, especially the main protagonists their support cast and some of the more important ancillary players. I have none of the other Data Books, so I can't speak to content versus those editions. But, in and of itself for a Shirow-san fan it's a must have.

Love the intricate story and humor
Love anime but Shirow Masamune needs to get his facts correct about Flash freezing as opposed to slow freezing to not create ice crystals inside od cells.

Awesome!
I originally had the book in many different forms. Unfortunately they were lost. But this book puts most of those in back one book form. Its a great to see how Shirow Masamune developed the story along with characters and setting. A must have for Appleseed fans.

Pretty much necessary for Appleseed/Shirow fans
To be honest, just like with Hypernotes, this couldn't be recommended more for fans of Appleseed and/or Shirow but it pretty much worthless for anyone else. This won't really get you into Appleseed and isn't really where you should start if you're looking to do so. This features many pages of full colour artwork and a lengthy manga chapter, not found in the 4 full volumes of Appleseed. In addition to that, it features maps, a timeline, organisation hierarchies and other details of the Appleseed world, all with the effect of making it seem more real and, I guess, more possible. Both ID (stands for Illustration and Data) and Hypernotes are basically information harvested from the Japanese Appleseed Databook and split into two volumes. I don't know for sure if all of the Databooks contents are presented in the two English volumes, but I get the feeling they aren't. While they're both indispensable for Appleseed fans, each volume really does feel like people cut and paste elements from Databook into two separate books with no real rhyme or reason. Another issue is that both books lead you to believe that they're going to be full of data about the Appleseed world, where in fact they're more like feature length additional chapters of the manga with lots of bonus material. The timeline, geographical data, hardware data etc takes up a small part of the book. That said, ID and Hypernotes are to Appleseed what the Appendices are to Lord of the Rings.

Filled with gorgeous art, and a great short story titled ''Called Game''
Appleseed ID is a Japanese cyberpunk manga/graphic novel by Shirow Masamune. It contains many of the full color artwork from the Appleseed comics, as well as a great short story titled ''Called Game''. I definitely recommend this to fans of the series.
