Hitachi Drives Are My All Time Favorites
I have been using Hitachi drives for a long time trouble free. I had a Seagate drive that came with my NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay 500 GB (1 x 500 GB) Network Attached Storage RND2150 and after using it less than 3 years I woke up one night to a heck of a racket. I thought it was a fan going blitz but it was the drive. I never heard a hard drive make that much racket. So I replaced the drive with a 1.5TB Hitachi, and it is quiet as a mouse. On top of that what I wanted was a drive to insert into my USB External drive case with AC power supply so I bought this 2TB drive. That way I could do a complete backup of the 1.5TB drive in the NAS and also keep extra space of 500 Gigs that is more like cold storage that I don't need shuffling around constantly being backed up since it doesn't change. So with this setup the NAS is constantly backing up everything in my network, and then once a week I break out the USB 2TB and attach it to the NAS to get a complete backup of the complete backups. That way if a lightning spike hits the box outside, and it somehow gets into the network, I have an unattached copy of everything that lightning can't touch. When the drive arrived I installed it into the USB Enclosure External Drive aluminum case, and formatted it. I did a full format so it took about 12 hours to run. I woke up in the morning, and felt the enclosed aluminum case on the outside and it was warm, not hot like so many other drives. You see after reading so many reviews from people who have USB Enclosures that are fan less an incredibly high number of these people have burnt out drives in six months. So putting any drive in a tight metal case without any breathing is room for disaster if you are running a hotter drive. Seventy-two hundred RPM drives generally run hotter. So this Hitachi Green Drive running at 5900 something is just what the doctor ordered. I also ran chkdsk with detect and repair bad sectors and it didn't find any. Good drives.By the way I built a Vista Windows Media Center PC and used two 1TB drives; a C and D drive and both of them were Hitachi's. Neither of them has given so much as a whimper even though they are on 24/7 in order to record all of my favorite TV shows. Both the WMCenter PC and the NAS were born around the same time. The Seagate in the NAS is on in an enclosed and cooled environment, only runs when there is a backup going on. The Media Center PC on the other hand is always on, and runs a lot because it is always recording, and playing back whatever I watch on TV. I have it connected to two Cisco-Linksys Media Center Extender with DVD so it is the source these extenders draw from even to watch live TV which is always recording and playing back a millisecond after the real event so you constantly have pausing, and rewind etc capabilities. Net result is this: Seagate gets far less use than the Hitachi, the Seagate crashed, and the Hitachi's are still going strong.I also love how quiet they are even when writing data. It is like a gentle super low grade thunder (what a word to use when you are trying to describe quiet :-) Anyhow that is the best way I can describe it, but imagine it is almost non-existent thunder, so much so that you have to listen real careful to even realize it is making any noise at all. Ok so I botched the quiet thing, but this thing is one of the quietest drives I have ever heard. The fact that it is green and uses less electricity, and that it runs so cool that it doesn't even need a fan all adds up to an extended expectation of a long life. Did I say I love Hitachi drives? They also come in at very good price points. Highly recommended.

PURE NIGHTMARE
I Received the Hitachi Deskstar 2 TB, 3.5 inch Coolspin Hard Drive four weeks ago. I was going to add it as a second hard drive (slave) to store items, since my primary was three quarters full. The first thing I noticed that was strange is when I opened the box. The hard drive was in a silver moisture barrier bag, but there was nothing else. No written instructions, no CD software, and no cables. Only a small label on the bag which identified the product. When I opened up my HP Pavilion computer, I found that though my primary hard drive that came with the computer was SATA, and this Hitachi Deskstar was also SATA, the power cables that were left were all IDE connections and I would need an adaptor cable. Can you believe this!!!!!!!!!!!! Well I sent away to another company, not Amazon, for the adaptor cable and it came eleven days later. I then connected the hard drive easy. When I turned the computer on it booted and said it found new hardware and then spent about two minutes installing. Then the computer said the new hardware was installed successfully and was ready to use. I then clicked on computer and saw that only my primary hard drive was listed and not the Hitachi second drive. I did see that the computer showed a new CD drive. I right clicked on the cd drive and one menu item said click to install, but when I did, it just said application not found. BIOS screen did not show the second drive, neither did the disk management screen. I sent away for another adaptor power cable since the one that I ordered seemed a bit cheap. Four days later, today as I write this, it arrived and I connected it and tried again, but got the same results. I looked on the internet for people who had this problem, however, I could not find any. Was I supposed to get some software with this hard drive? Where is the installation software??????? Where are the Instructions????? I installed a few hard drives on my old PC and it was real easy, not this time. Sam

So far so good(or possibly even better)
I just ordered this last night around 6PM local time and received it overnite Saturday delivery this morning at 11AM. Wow, all I can say is thanks Amazon Prime. The drives were well packaged in a clever package which shows the lengths to which Amazon goes to please its customers. It's a newer package than even the last drive I bought just last month. Basically it's a cardboard origami kangaroo pouch(if you've no imagination there are pictures). Very clever indeed. The drives have arrived so quickly that I've already got my array rebuilding and I was pleasantly surprised that the new drive is virtually silent. My ix2-200 originally came with Seagate LP Barracudas @ 1TB and they were quite noisy with all the head parking and whatnot, which is why I suspect it failed within a year. Not wanting to risk another failure I went looking to not only replace these drives, but expand disk capacity as well. These drives do not employ Advanced Formatting and are still somewhat low power, although thats not stated, being that they are 5.9K RPM drives. The replication of nearly a TB of data is close to completion(82%) in just over an hour now, which seems fairly quick. The lone surviving Seagate from which it is replicating is still making noise but I suspect once I've swapped that drive out I shouldn't hear the array anymore.I didn't rate the quality of the drives yet as I've had it running for less than 2 hours now, but believe me, if this thing fails I'll be the first back here to edit this review. You can check out my other reviews as well; I rate quite often in hopes of getting a Vine invitation[shameless plea]. My goal is to make sure that others can read well informed opinions about the things they are considering spending hard(or easily) earned cash on. From my experience Amazon likes to make sure of that as well, and in times like these I surely appreciate that.
