House of Chains: Malazan Book of the Fallen 4

Do I always know what's going on? Not exactly. But having just finished this fourth of the Malazan books, I have become comfortably accustomed to Erikson's writing and plotting style. Starting about midway through the previous book, Memories of Ice, I feel like I truly became captivated. While enjoyable, the first two books were challenging for me. But now I think I finally have adapted my reading and expectations to Erikson's insanely epic style of writing. One has to let go of the usual expectations one has when reading a series with these books. You are being transported to another world, and no one is going to lead you by the hand here.Need some escapism? There is no more enjoyable, thrilling, grim, funny, gory, and entertaining world to escape to than Malazan. The large cast of characters is daunting, but there are characters that really shine and find their way into your heart and memory. Even the occasionally drawn out and intricate conversations and military planning sessions have become enjoyable for me. These books reward paying very close attention to everything that happens and is said.This is the book that really nailed it home for me: This series is well worth the effort, no matter how lost you may at times feel. Truly and deliciously EPIC.

La edición inglesa de este libro es muy buena (no tiene la letra demasiado pequeña a pesar de ser edición de bolsillo) y quedé muy contento con su estado al llegar; estaba impoluto. Nunca me habían llegado libros pedidos por aquí que no tuvieran al menos alguna magulladura en las esquinas, pero este estaba perfecto y fue una grata sorpresa.

Where to start on a review for this book/series? I mean with something on the epic scale and imagination as this story, characters, and world building. The Mythology of the world alone is on such a epic scale. So much to comprehend.All I have been hearing since I started reading Fantasy again in 2011 is “you have to read Malazan!” So I finally listened and started. I think I have a new obsession. I can now see what everyone has been going on and on about for all this time. I am hooked and I now need more! So yes I will be continuing this series, and I can’t wait! I know more greatness awaits and I am highly anticipating the journey to come.Overall a great read. I was entertained, I loved the epic sprawling world created here, and I want to go right into the next book and get more from this series. This might not be for everyone but after starting this series, I know it is for me. A magnificent read. The only thing I can think to describe it is a mind blowing. Everything is just so rich and complex, and such a joy to wrap your mind around.I loved the first three books, and this one is great as well. I keep thinking the change of locations, story lines, and characters are gong to lessen these books, but they never do. Such fantastic and intriguing characters. That reminds me of a question I always seem to get asked when I post these reviews. Who are your favorite characters from this book? So a new section in my Malazan reviews. FAVORITE CHARACTERS FROM THIS BOOK: This book to me is all Karsa Orlong! And I am good with that. An awesome character! A new Sword and Sorcery hero. You all now how much that appeals to me. Can we get some books all about Karsa! They would be new S&S classics. Lead me war leader!I am addicted now! So much so I want to start collecting these marvelous books. Trying to find hardcovers is impossible it seems (for a good price anyhow) if anyone has some idea’s for a broke a** like myself, let me know.As you know if you have read my reviews before I am not about long reviews with synopsis and spoilers. Non mi ero mai preso così tanto di una saga fantasy, ma la saga Malazan è genio puro. Erikson sicuramente sarà posto tra i best degli scrittori fantasy degli ultimi anni. Non perde mai un colpo il nostro Steven e non ci delude mai. Le storie sono sempre affascinanti e i personaggi sono a dir poco epici. Non vedo l'ora di continuare a leggere tutte le sue opere. Consigliatissimo a tutti gli appasionati del genere.
