I just received this and noticed it smells very strongly of alcohol (similar to rubbing alcohol). Is this normal?

NO, this is not normal. I have not used this in a long time. It always had a mildly unpleasant smell, which I expect is just the natural smell of the ingredients, when there is no fragrance to mask them.

Does it work good as a leave in conditioner?

I have never tried it that way, but it is so rich I can't imagine it working as a leave in
